Q : What is the role of scientists in the world and their responsibilities for bringing to us peace and justice?
A : The topic is peace with justice. It’s like saying, ‘marriage with love’ — it’s so obvious; because when people hear the word ‘peace’ it may be defined as absence of war. But if you add the edge of peace with justice you move on in a way that makes sense not only for peace activists but for all citizens.
At a hotel in Geneva, a notice at the front desk said: ‘Please leave your values here’. Of course, they meant ‘valuables’! There is a difference between value and valuables, but there is also a deep connection, for the question of values is one of the fundamental challenges to peace work today. What were they marching for in Times Square, or in the Arab world, (Arab Spring)? Why are young people marching in Brazil and Turkey? Because they want to promote central values. No one can exclude himself by saying ‘Oh, I’m a scientist!’ These are common values which people are fighting for. Together, 70 religious leaders from all countries of Arab Spring spoke the same language of citizenship — to have their own dignity and human rights affirmed after years of oppression; that is why women and other young people march on the streets.
So speaking about peace with justice is speaking about values translated into the life of everyday persons. Peace with justice is to be able to provide health.’
