Pradosham Pradakshina, Timings, Pooja procedure in Siva Temple

pradosham siva temple pradakshinaPradosha or Pradosham is a bimonthly occasion on the thirteenth day of every fortnight in Lunar calendar of vedic tradition.
Pradosham literally means the removal of sins ( Pra : Removal + Dosham : Sin). It is this auspicious 3 hour period (1.5 hours before and after the sunset), which is the optimum time for worship of Lord Siva.
Pradosham is a specific window of time that occurs during the day. Energy during this time makes it easier to dissolve and release karma. Stories, prayers and rituals have been built around this time to help us better work with and understand the significance of these karma busting energies.
In Lunar calendar, period between new moon day to full moon day is called “Sukla Paksha” and period between full moon day to new moon day is called “Krishna paksha“.
During every month and during every paksha, the point of time when triyodashi (13th day of the fortnight) meets the end of dwadasi (12th day of fortnight) is called Pradosha Kaalam.
During Pradosha, Nandi (the sacred bull of Siva) in all the Siva temples in India is worshipped. The festival idol of Siva with Parvathi in a seated pose on Nandi is taken as a procession in the temple complex.
Among all the pradosha’s, Sani Pradosh (13th lunar day on saturday) and Soma Pradosh (13th lunar day on monday) are considered to be important.
Maha Pradhosh is the Pradosha which falls before Maha Sivarathri in the month of Maagha (around february of every year) in traditional Hindu Calendar.
The performance of the vrata involves a fast followed by a vigil. A bath is taken one hour before sunset and Lord Siva, Goddess Parvati, Ganesha, Skanda, and Nandi are worshipped. Following this, Lord Siva is invoked.
Praying in that time will free us from our sins and gives moksha at end of our life.
During pradosha time a special type of circumambulating called soma sUtra pradakshinam is done.

Pradosha Purana and pradosha pradakshinam

During Satya Yuga, gods (Devas) and the demons (Asuras) were churning the milky ocean with the help of Vasuki, the serpent king, hoping to extract amrutam (nectar) from the milk ocean. Vasuki who was employed as a rope for churning, endured severe abrasions and strangulation. Thereupon, she spewed halahalam, a potent dark poison capable of destroying the worlds. Threatened by the scorching venom, the celestials fled in great horror. Brahma took to His heels. Vishnu’s bluish body darkened further. Indra could not be seen. Agni, the fire god, could not bear the raging heat. Yama ran amuck in all directions. Varuna became unconscious, Kubera fled. Hosts of siddhas, Caranas, Gandharvas, Yakshas and Maharshis went to Kailasa and sought the Lord’s feet as refuge.
God Siva was moved with pity at their plight and was overcome with compassion by their prayers. Soon He bade Sundara for a prompt intervention, who then rushed to the ocean, collected the all-pervasive poison and holding it in his hand as a small jambu fruit, returned to Kailasa. The Lord became exceedingly happy after seeing it. He showed it to Girija and gave the title ‘Halahala’ to Sundara, who thenceforth came to be known as Halahala Sundara.
Thereupon, the Lord accepted the Halahala pellet from his hand and, with the loving permission of Universal Mother, swallowed it. By goddess Uma’s command, the pellet froze in the Lord’s throat, painting it blue and becoming an embellishment, gave Him the name NilakanTa.
On Trayodhasi(thirteenth moon day) they realised their sin of not praying the God and pleaded for forgiveness. The pleased graceful Lord Siva forgave them and danced between the horns of the Nandhi (Holy Bull). That time is called Pradhosham. Whoever Prays Lord Siva in that time, he fulfills their wishes and give them mukthi. Anoint Lord Siva with Love, He would give Himself !
During Pradhosha time anointing (Abhishekam) the Siva deity with the Following is considered fruitful.

Somasuthra Pradakshinam (Pradosham Pradakshina) is a unique way of circumambulating the Siva Lingam

First saluting the Rishabha (Holy Bull or Nandi) go anti-clockwise and salute Siva (not crossing the Gomukhi). Now return in the clockwise manner salute Rishabha and continue clockwise till the Gomukhi (not to cross it again). Then return in anti-clockwise direction salute the Rishabha again and proceed towards Siva. From there return back clockwise without worshiping Rishabham and reach the Gomukhi. Finally return back anticlockwise from there to salute Rishabha and continue to Siva and return back to Rishabham and worship the Shiva Lingam (at the altar) by viewing through the space between the two horns of the Holy Bull. This is one Pradakshinam. Three such times Pradakshinam to be done. If you carefully observe the curve traced by doing the pradakshinam is very similar to the periphery of the crescent. Hence this way of circumambulating is called Somasutra Pradakshinam.
During the pradhosham time Somasootra Pradakshinam is the recommended way of circumambulating the God. In many of the temples this is followed always. A point to note here is that the gomukhi is never crossed. gomukhi is the place where the water after anointing (abhiSheka theertham) would be flowing northwards out. By doing this way of Pradakshinam one does not step over this holy water.
As per the above marked symbols this Pradakshinams is to be done. First saluting the RiShabha (Holy Bull) go anti-clockwise and salute Siva (not crossing the Gomukhi). Now return in the clockwise manner salute Nandi and continue clockwise till the Gomukhi (not cross it again). Then return in anti-clockwise direction salute the Nandi again and proceed towards Siva. From there return back clockwise without worshiping Rishabha and reach the Gomukhi. Finally return back anti-clockwise from there to salute Nandi and continue to Siva and return back to Nandi and worship the Siva Lingam (at the altar) by viewing through the space between the two horns of the Holy Bull. This is one Pradakshinam. Three such times Pradakshinam need to be performed.
If you carefully observe the curve traced by doing the Pradakshinam is very similar to the periphery of the crescent. Hence this way of circumambulating is called Somasutra Pradakshinam. (See above picture for detailed Circumambulation way in Siva temple).

Pradosham for Realization of God

The purpose of our human life is realization of self and god. You can get to your life purpose only when your karma has been wiped clean, and the time is ripe for grace to flow to you. When that happens an intense flowering happens, and both the material and spiritual worlds open up for you. You have a choice then on the abundance that you are presented with.
Whether you take the spiritual or material route, one thing is certain: you have to completely eliminate your karma to even to get there. Pradosham rituals give a great opportunity to build a road to prosperity and true happiness. On the 13th Moon Pradosham days, special poojas are offered to Lord Shiva who eliminates your karma and helps to bring light into your life. -booksfact.com

Vaishno Devi , is, of course an abode of the Great Goddess Devi Ma. But how many of you have seen the formation rock of Lord Shiva that is inside the same cave? On the Opposite side of the three Pindis of the Mata Darshan, is seated Shivji, as if He is also saluting the Goddess.
Did you know , also that besides the main cave, there is also a Shivji Gufa, about 300 steps downward from the main Bhawan! So, next time, take time to see this cave also! Jai Durga Bhawani, Jai shiv shanker!

THE SILENCE OF TIME

Gambar: THE SILENCE OF TIME

Lord Shiva The Dhyanastha Yogi.
A beautiful picture. Its notable that Even Shivji's Trisula has frozen in the snow, but He remains unaffected.
This is His prowess in Yoga, His internal Tapas, that He is of even a tougher element than Wrought Iron.

But there is also another story i am writing for my Forthcoming Book,
"SHIVA, Flight of the Ultimate time traveler"
In that, this is the vital period between the death of Sati and Birth of Parvati. I will share the chapter excerpt with you later, as we come nearer to publishing the book. But here is the beginning;
two lines in verse which will give the right feel of Shiva's mood at that time :

She turned into fire
He
froze into silence.

Pain is a given, but suffering is a choice.

Gambar: Pain is a given, but suffering is a choice. Everyone faces obstacles in life. They are part of life. You can choose to be victim or victor, succumb to setbacks or rise above them. Life is like a game. Some times you win, at other times you lose. You have to be able to take it in your stride.

If you depend on the constantly changing, unpredictable world you will get crushed by it. Learn to be self-reliant. The world will bow to you. Spiritual development is inversely proportional to your dependence on the world. The more you lean on it, the less you get. The less you need the more you get! Vedanta helps you become independent of the world and enables you to gain more from it.

An enlightened master is totally independent, yet has the world at his feet! There are three states of balance restless, fragile and steady. The lowest is when you are like a cone on its apex, totally dependent on external factors.

The intermediate state is when you are like a cone on its side calm by yourself but the slightest fluctuation creates long spells of mental agitation. Be like a cone resting on its base. Nothing will topple or overwhelm you. You will be constantly at peace irrespective of what the world offers.

Every challenge is an opportunity to grow. The way out is to build inner re serves. Gain knowledge of your real worth. Fluctuations of the world will no longer traumatise you. They will only amuse and entertain you. Assess people and situations what they are, not what you would like them to be. Then you will not have un realistic expectations and disappointments. Defer decisions if your mind is clouded. Consult a clear thinker who will throw fresh light on the matter. Get a sense of humour! The spiritual path does not demand change of lifestyle, wardrobe or location.
You do not have to move away from family , friends or career. It only calls for a change of attitude. Move from the mindset of taking, to that of giving. The law is give, you gain; grab, you lose. Base your life on serving, adding value to others, offering your talent to a larger cause. See the miraculous results it brings.

When you have conflict with the people you love most you tend to blame them. Look within. It is your selfishness that is the cause. You expect people to dance to your tune; you make demands and impose restrictions on them. This makes them want to break free. Love people for what they are. Accept them with their faults and idiosyncrasies. Learn to be self-sufficient. You will enjoy their presence and not miss them when they are gone. They will love you dearly .

Objectivity is the secret of enjoyment.
You are able to `enjoy' tragedy , even murder, and horror on screen, because you know you are apart from it. Similarly you are an actor on the stage of life. Play your role to the best of your ability , wholeheartedly . Exit when the time comes. You are your Self.

You have nothing to do with the roles you play . You seem to have lost your identity . Understand who you are. The world will lose its sting. You will enjoy the roles and retreat into an oasis of Bliss when your part is over.

Let's Create Trans-personal Leadership

Gambar: Let's Create Trans-personal Leadership

Leadership is one of the most discussed subjects today. Research carried out by top B-schools and validated by business leaders has led to a new way that is different from that of traditional leaders who believed in `knowing what to tell others to do'. Well-timed is also neurological research, revealing that great potential exists untapped in a wide spectrum of human dimensions such as cognitive, emotional, intuitive, creative and spiritual. During the early 20th century, Abraham Maslow presented his `humanistic psychology', that stated that all human kind is ultimately aimed at Self-actualisation.

At that time, Stanislov Grof from Czechoslovakia influenced this work to evolve what is known as trans-personal vision, causing a major shift in our thinking about leadership as merely an immense ability to solve problems, acquire knowledge or cope with technology. Leadership is a systematic development of `temperament' and `a way of being' that the person creates. This opened up new possibilities: an integrated mode of thinking and delivery, the compelling need to cultivate personal and professional abilities to care about a new expanding constituency that is, that of `others'.

Building on these, UK entrepreneur John Knights founded LeaderShape to train such leaders. He calls it Trans-personal Leadership, that can be cultivated and institutionalised. This idea emerges from eastern and western wisdom in a synchronous way on a belief platform that it is all about leading beyond the ego. A trans-personal leader knows how to genuinely care about himself, and so is able to go beyond supporting and providing clarity on possible risks, opportunities and innovations for the `other'.

Interestingly, in order to co-create lasting value, the trans-personal leader helps create a high-trust environment where people first coexist without much suspicion. This also minimises avoidable competitiveness. All these `virtues' can be identified and supported in an individual.

Furthermore, this belief system lives the saying: `None of us is as smart as all of us.' So, everything happens on consensus and unanimity. It is a given that everyone is responsible for what one perceives and the feelings one experiences. Achievement is also shared-value by the team, and the individual's contribution is not the same as what one gets in a traditional award-function! Edmund Hillary said: ``It is not the mountain i conquered, but myself.'' `Leading beyond the ego' is ultimately an exercise in self-mastery. The underlying faith is in the dictum: `Change begins with me'.It is not about being a saviour, because one is just a source of inspiration for those whose dignity and self-interest are really cared for. Nor is one a servant because people need empowerment and self-worth rather than being `served'. Just coach them into empowerment! So, we neither work `at' people or `for' them. We convince ourselves and our co-workers to work with others. Many centuries ago Lao Tzu culled out a relevant verse from the Tao Te Ching, Book of Tao which has been stated in slightly different words by many . It says: ``The wicked leader is the one who they despise. The good leader is the one they revere. A great leader is one who, when the work is done, people say they did it''! Trans-personal leadership is a scientific process of several stages, competencies and techniques centred on philosophies to see how enlightened leaders can be supported and evolved with the argument that emotional and other facets of leaders can help them lead people by their strengths rather than weaknesses.

5. It should be far better to live on alms in this world without slaying these high-souled elders. By killing these elders, even though money-loving, I should only be tasting joys smeared with their blood. We hear that the sea is calm, but it is only on the surface, similarly agitation does not affect Drona’s mind at any time. This limitless sky is capable of being measured some time, but Drona’s heart is unfathomably deep (36-40).

Nectar may turn sour or the diamond may break some time, but his mental balance will not shake even if provoked. They say that the mother has true love for her child, but the mind of Drona is kindness incarnate. Drona is the fount of compassion, the mine of all virtues, the limitless sea of learning, so said Arjuna. He is not only eminent, but also kind; how then can we think of killing such a person? That we should kill our elders in battle and enjoy royal pleasures does not seem right to me, even if I have to part with my life (41-45).

This is such a heinous crime; even if their death brings us greater joys, I would rather go without them and start begging. I would even lay down my life for their sake or resort to a mountain cave, rather than take up arms against them. O Lord, how can we strike them in their vital parts with newly sharpened arrows and enjoy royal pleasures? What do we gain thereby? How can we enjoy these blood-stained pleasures? I therefore do not appreciate your reasoning. Please give thought to this, so said Arjuna to Krishna. But Krishna did not at all like what he heard (46-50).

When Arjuna divined this, he became afraid and said, “O Lord, why don’t you listen to what I say?”

6. Nor do I know which is better for us, that we conquer them or they conquer us. Those after killing whom we should not care to live, the Kauravas stand in array before us. I have told you whatever is in my mind. But you know what is best for me to do in this matter. They, for whom we would fain lay down our lives, rather than be hostile to them, are standing here with the object of fighting us. I cannot make up my mind what is better for us, to slay them or withdraw from here.

7. My nature is stricken with fault of pity, and my mind is confused about my duty, Pray tell me for certain what is better; I am your disciple, guide me, who am your suppliant. I do not know what is proper for me to do; I am so bewildered by reason of this delusion (51-55).

When the sight is enveloped by darkness, it cannot see even things close to it, such is my state. My perplexed mind cannot decide what is good for me. O Krishna, consider this and tell me what is proper in this case. You are our friend; you are all in all to us. You are our teacher, brother, father and also our favorite God. You have always been our protector in adversity. The teacher does not at all forsake his disciple, as the sea does not part from the river, which joins it (56-60). If a mother abandons her child, how will it survive? O Lord, you are our only friend, more so than to others, and if what I said does not appeal to you, then tell me quickly, O Supreme Person, what is proper for me to do, which is not contrary to dharma.

Why is Lakshmi restless?

Gambar: Why is Lakshmi restless?

Let’s decipher one very interesting "personality puzzle" in Hindu Mythology - Why is Lakshmi 'Chanchala' - The Restless One..?

Having understood the nature of wealth, Ancient Gurus in the Hindu Mythology prescribed the following route to richness: Do not obstruct the flow of wealth, do not hoard, do not plunder, simply ensure wealth flows continuously in the desired direction. Since wealth has to flow, our Hindu Goddess of Fortune and Prosperity - Lakshmi Ji, is given the rather Unflattering Title of 'Chanchala' - The Restless One.

Goddess Lakshmi has no favorites. She does not discriminate on the basis of caste, creed, gender or social status. The same bowl of rice can satisfy the hunger of a king or a beggar, the same blanket will provide warmth to a man or a eunuch, the same roof will shelter equally the judge and the criminal. Lakshmi will go to anyone who seeks her and makes himself worthy of her.

Lakshmi even makes no moral judgments. Wealth and Power are essentially Impersonal. They come with a position and not with the person. People bow not to the 'Man' under the crown but to the 'King' wearing the crown and sitting on the throne.

For instance, Ravana and Duryodhana - Villains of the Hindu Epics - Ramayana and Mahabharata - were affluent Monarchs. Ravana lived in a City of Gold (Lanka) while the Hero-God Rama lived like a hermit in the forest for 14 years. The unrighteous Duryodhana always lived as a King in Hastinapur while the righteous Yudhishthira was born in a forest and spent much of his life in exile or in hiding.

Symbols of Kingship, Crown and Throne remind us that our wealth and our power are not dependent on us. We need wealth and power, wealth and power do not need us. When the rich man dies, his wealth outlives him sustaining all those who are left behind. When the powerful man dies, the power he wielded goes to someone as worthy or gets distributed amongst many.

The Spiritual Man therefore doesn't get carried away by the bounty of Lakshmi. He knows that she will stay with him only as long as he makes himself worthy of her. If he fails to keep her, she will leave him. She stays so long as she is treated with reverence and her value is realized. She turns her back on those who are unworthy of affection.

Legend has it that even the King of Gods - Lord Indra lost his wealth, when he over-indulged in wine and women, ignored his Dharma, thereby incurring the wrath of sages who cursed him with poverty and misfortune.

According to Ramayana, Mahabharata and Puranas, Goddess Lakshmi first lived with the demons like Hiranayaksha, Hiranakashipu, Virochana, Bali and Ravana before the Gods acquired her. Cities of the demons like Hiranyapura, Alakapuri, Lanka and Bhogavati have all been described as Cities of Gold - the mineral manifestation of Lakshmi.

In Vedic Times, Lakshmi was associated with many Gods like the elephant-riding rain-god Indra (bestower of fresh water), the crocodile-riding sea-god Varuna (source of all water), and the antelope-riding moon-god Soma (waxer and waner of tides). Yet Lakshmi neither stayed long with the demons nor with these Gods.

The association with numerous demons and deities also including Ganesha, Kubera and even with the world-renouncing Hermit-God Shiva, has led to Lakshmi being viewed as Fickle, Restless and Independent.

Her fickleness is shown by the speed with which she abandons a God or a King in favor of another God or King. She is like the throne or crown of a King, belonging to anyone who sits on the throne and claims the crown. She is attached not to the man but to the position.

Philosophers view the fickleness and independence of Lakshmi as an allegory for the restlessness of fortune. More often than not, there are no rational explanations for fortune and misfortune. Good times come without warning and leave as suddenly without any reason.

Just as water must flow or it will stagnate and breed diseases and food will rot if not consumed or distributed. In the same way, wealth must flow so that it can nourish society. For the economy to thrive, wealth needs to be constantly created and distributed.

Lakshmi enriches and empowers only when she is in motion. Hence, She is known as The Restless One, 'Chanchala'. She needs to be always on the move. Any attempt to pin her down and hoard her, earns her wrath.

The only God with whom Lakshmi has formed a long-lasting relationship is the world-affirming warrior-god Vishnu-Narayana, the ultimate refuge of man, the preserver of the world. She remains the eternal, faithful consort of Lord Vishnu probably because He is the embodiment of Dharma, and he keeps re-incarnating himself into various Avatars (like Rama for Sita, Krishna for Radha), thus satisfying her ever restless re-birth spirit.

As by nature, Lakshmi is said to be possessive, jealous, demanding and easily displeased, Vishnu has to constantly work towards keeping her happy. In the process, he also domesticates her, a form that is very beneficial to all devotees. No longer fleet-footed, She sits demurely by his side, on his lap or at his feet. Lakshmi's long-term association with Vishnu has confirmed her exalted status in Hinduism.

Some of the Mantras of the Goddess of Wealth is are - "Sarvagyay Sarvavarday Sarvadushtbhaydkree, Sarvadukhaharay Devi Mahalakshmi Namostutay"

"Siddhi Buddhipraday Devi Bhuktimuktipradayeenee Mantramurtay Sada Devi Mahalakshmi Namostutay"

"Aadhantarhitay Devi Aadhshakti Maheshwari Yogajay Yogasambhutay Mahalakshmi Namostutay"

WORDS OF SRI ANANDAMAYI MA-4

In very truth the Guru dwells within, and unless you discover the inner Guru, nothing can be achieved. If you feel no desire to turn to God, bind yourself by a daily routine of sadhana, as school children do, whose duty it is to follow a fixed timetable.

When prayer does not spontaneously flow from your heart, ask yourself: "Why do I find pleasure in the fleeting things of this world?" If you crave for some outer thing or feel specially attracted to a person, you should pause and say to yourself: "Look out, you are being fascinated by the glamour of this!" Is there a place where God is not?

Family life, which is the Ashrama of the householder, can also take you in His direction, provided it is accepted as an asrama. Lived in this spirit, it helps man to progress towards Self-realization. Nevertheless, if you hanker after anything such as name, fame or position, God will bestow it on you, but you will not feel satisfied. The Kingdom of God is a whole, and unless you are admitted to the whole of it you cannot remain content. He grants you just a little, only to keep Your discontent alive, for without discontent there can be no progress. You, a scion of the Immortal, can never become reconciled to the realm of death, neither does God allow you to remain in it. He Himself kindles the sense of want in you by granting you a small thing, only to whet your appetite for a greater one. This is His method by which He urges you on. The traveller on this path finds it difficult and feels troubled, but one who has eyes to see can clearly perceive that the pilgrim is advancing. The distress that is experienced burns to ashes all pleasure derived from worldly things. This is what is called ‘tapasya’. What obstructs one on the spiritual path bears within itself seeds of future suffering. Yet the heartache, the anguish over the effects of these obstructions, are the beginning of an awakening to Consciousness.

A young girl was talking to SRI MA. She said:

"When I sit down to meditate I do not intend to contemplate any form, but how is it possible to meditate on the formless? I have noticed that at times, when I try to meditate, images of deities come floating before my mind."

SRI MA: Whatever image arises in your mind, that you should contemplate; just observe in what shape God will manifest Himself to you. The same form does not suit every person. For some, Rama may be most helpful, for some Siva, for others Parvati, and again for others the formless.

He certainly is formless ; but at the same time, watch in what particular form He may appear to you in order to show you the way. Consequently, whichever of His forms comes into your mind, that you should contemplate in all its minute details.

Proceed as follows: When sitting down to meditate,

first of all contemplate the form of a deity;

then imagining Him to be enthroned on His seat,

bow down before Him and do japa.

When you have concluded the japa bow down once more and, having enshrined Him in your heart, leave your seat.

This, in short, may be your practice if you are not able to meditate on the Brahman.

Be ever convinced that at all times and without exception He will do and is doing what is best for you. Reflect thus: In order to aid me, He has revealed Himself to me in this particular guise. He is with form as well as without; the entire universe is within Him and pervaded by Him. This is why it is said: "The Sadguru is the World-teacher and the World-teacher the Sadguru".

The aforesaid is especially meant for you. The same does not apply to every person. The more you contemplate Him, the more rapid will be your progress. If any image arises in your mind, it is He, just as He is also the formless; mark what comes spontaneously.
