He stood upon one of his ten heads in the midst of five fires for thousand years to please Shiva. At the end of thousand years he cut his head and offered it to Shiva in the fire as oblation

Ever kind Bholenath, who can be easily pleased and propitiated to obtain the desired boon. The boons granted to Ravana whose mother was great devotee of Shiva and worshipped him in Linga form. But Indira stole away that lingam. Ravana promised her that he would visit Kailash and bring her the Atmalingam. Ravana began his severe penance and austerities in Kailash. He stood upon one of his ten heads in the midst of five fires forthousand years to please Shiva. At the end of thousand years he cut his head and offered it to Shiva in the fire as oblation. ‪Then he stood on his second head for next thousand years and then cut that head off. When he was about to cut his last head to propitiate Shiva at the end of ten thousand years, Shiva appeared before him. Ravana requested for three boons ; marriage to beautiful woman as Uma, Immortality and Atmalingam. Shiva at once granted him immortality and Atmalingam on a condition that he would not use them against Shiva. But Shiva has no idea of a woman as beautiful as Uma. Ravana then threatened to engage himself in more severe penance, Mahadev then had to surrender him his own wife. But soon Narada tricked Ravana to loose all the three boons. Most generous Shiva who grants boons even when he knows they would be misused or used against his own self. Bhasmasura, who obtained a boon from Mahadev to the effect that on whosoever head he puts his hand would be reduced to ashes. And he tried this boon on Shivas head itself. But for Sri Vishnus timely help in the form Mohini, Shiva would have been a victim of boon granted by himself. Arjuna pleased shiva and obtained the formidable Pasupati Astra which could destroy the whole world! Peace ~ Jai Bholenath!!
