SHIVA THE YOGI, OR SHIVA TATTVA THE FORMLESS SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS?
SHIVA THE YOGI, OR SHIVA TATTVA THE FORMLESS SUPREME CONSCIOUSNESS?
God Shiva the beloved of many Millions, is loved in many different forms. There is, of course , the Shivlinga, which is worshipped as His formless essence. But he is also equally popular in Iconography. He is portrayed as the Supreme Ascetic, the meditator par excellence, the Master of stillness as the Dhyanastha Yogi.He is also the Lord of dance, as Nataraja, the one who dances all of creation into being, and then, at the end of a time cycle, dances it back into Himself.
Such is the Mahima of Lord Shiva, that he is all things in one, for verily, all things from Him do come!!
One of the most endearing portrayals of Him, is as Shiv Shanker, the Husband of Parvati. The Kashmir Shaiv Darsana : Kashmir Shaivism calls Him Umapati in this most important facet. Here is a beautiful statue of Shiva parvati from my hometown temple, Ranbireshwar Mandir, Jammu. He is shown as a handsome Groom with a moustache, and parvati is shown seated next to him as a demure wife, an inseparable half.
