Saṃsara is the repeating cycle of birth, life and death, reincarnation as well as one's actions and consequences in the past, present, and future. The literal meaning of Samsara is a wandering through. The many states of existence that we are wandering through, involved in the cycle of birth, death and rebirth. We continue to be born and reborn in various realms in the form of a human, animal, or other being, depending on karma. Life is impermanent. After we come into this world, we live, finally we have to die. But death is not end of everything. Actually, we existed before we were born, and we will have another life after death. We will be reborn in another place and the cycle of life and death will continue endlessly. This cycle of birth and death is determined by our karma. Due to our past karma, we are born as human beings in this life. Similarly, the good and evil karma of this life and past lives will also affect our future lives. We will reap what we sow.
It is avidya, or ignorance, of one's true self that leads to ego-consciousness of the body and the phenomenal world. This grounds one in kama, desire, and the perpetual chain of karma and reincarnation. Through egotism and desire one creates the causes for future becoming. The state of illusion that gives rise to this is known as maya. Through ascetic practice one finally attains sanctity and liberation, moksha or Mukti. Moksha can be achieved by love of God or Bhakti Yoga.
A person who wishes to end the cycle of life and death needs to let go of self centred love and attachment to self destructive living. To achieve this we should remember not to do evil, but to do more good. We should accumulate our merits in order to gain a good repay in the future. We should not attach ourselves to the process of life and death, but to strengthen our determination to leave this deluded, suffering world.
Bhagwat Gita says: One who endeavours to Break the Cycle of Birth and Death gets Mukti, Liberation. Recognize suffering. The quest to stop the eternal cycle of births and deaths begins with an internal realization that one is weary of chasing youth, beauty, wealth, status and power. We have done this in so many lifetimes and found earthly rewards to be fleeting, temporal and shallow. Replace the chase for earthly desires for longing to be one with God. Develop a single longing for Nirvana, the end of suffering. Remember God throughout the day and night by chanting his name. It doesn't matter what you choose to call Him, Faith is all that matters. Recognise him in everything around you. Treat your body as a living temple, he is within you. Live as simple a life as possible. Reduce your belongings and debts to the bare minimum and learn to trust that you will receive what you need. Give up ambition and ego. These are the two biggest obstacles to ending the cycle of reincarnation. The less you want, the less draw earthly life has on you. As the desire to acquire evaporates, greed, jealousy, ego and the need for power all disappear, leaving the path and mind clear to focus on God!!
