SHIVA WORSHIPS THE SHIVALINGA

This depiction of Shiva worshipping the Shivalinga , is a favourite Shaivic imagery. It full of spiritual meaning.
Why does Shivji sit behind His own Shivalinga in prayer?

Because, in the simplest words: He is committed to His own creation. He, is His own first votary.

If you compare this to a modern day analogy, where during an election, the contender for  'Head of state'  also goes to caste his vote, we note that he is up early, one of the first to caste his own ballot selection! But this comparison, i give only to make you understand that a good leader believes in what he stands for, he signs up for the teachings and vision he himself gives us.

The difference is that in Divinity, there is no election, no selection, and no contest. But a seeker must respect the Divine ideal he seeks, and this can only happen if the Divine itself upholds its foundations! So too, Shivji respects what His own Shaivism stands for, He is the first adherent, the first to vouch for the Shiva way,
and we understand that He is His own first votary. He believes in His own manifesto, and stands by His principles. He leads by example and from the front.

But of course, the analogy ends here, you cannot be " Voted" God !
And although i truly loved reading them, I do not personally subscribe to some stories theorising that Shiva was a man , raised to the level of God by his feats and followers. Rather, my work is based on the understanding that Shiva was always God, but endearingly Human, lovable like a good man in our midst!
And this understanding is based on the notings of the ancient Rishis; They said a surprising thing in the Vedanta and Upanishads:
You cannot Become God, You are always that!

What did they mean by this?
Their teaching was expanded for us by the Rishis of Kashmir in their Shaiv Darshan. They explained that sometimes, God makes Himself forget that He is God, just before he descends to earth. This paves the way for play- Lila.
So once God ( Shiva) comes to earth as another jiva, he undergoes the same world and stages as everyone else, the same joys and sorrows, and finally he begins to question if there is a creator to all this. God looks for God! The Nath Sampradaya states:
Shiva seems to play the lila of losing Himself, then looking for Himself , and finally finding Himself out. According to them, God finds His own true nature when He is in deep Dhyana, Samadhi ; and it is that great realisation which the great Adi shankara termed as Chidanand roopam shivoham. It is also called Satchitananda or Satyam Shivam Sundaram.

We note also, that ultimately we are all seekers of the same truth and helped by Gurus and saints who have journeyed before us.
When He comes on the same journey, In this lovely Lila, God is also helped by His own Rishis as Gurus.
The teacher becomes the taught! This is not difficult to understand, rather, this is the real beauty of God's Lila and love. That is why you have examples of Ramji being taught by Rishi Vashisht, Krishnji being taught by Guru Sandeepan: So that they may remain centered in their Godhood.

Incidentally, the term Yoga, means " To conjoin with the Divine" and Shivji is also called Yogeshwar, the God of the Yogis, which title further simplifies the point that Shivji is always centered in His Supreme God consciousness.Always meditating for the welfare of the Universe. And we note how beautifully the Shivalinga is meant to represent the whole manifest world.

Aum Shiv Shakti Namah.

GANAS WELCOME MA PARVATI

GANAS WELCOME MA PARVATI
The welcome to Parvati in Kailash was stupendous.
Ganas and ganikas had lined up on both sides of the mountain path leading up to Shiva’s cave.
Their hands were full of forest flowers and some wild berries which they showered upon the divine couple. They cheered loudly, “Welcome Parvati, welcome Mistress of the jungle, Ruler of the world, Goddess of our hearts! Welcome to Kailash, Mother Annapurna, nourisher of our bodies! Welcome Bhagwati, nourisher of our souls! Welcome, welcome, welcome home!”

THE ARRIVAL OF TIME

THE ARRIVAL OF TIME
It was a sunny morning, and Shiva was feeling good. He readied Nandi for a ride to Daksha’s palace. Nandi himself was in a hurry and charged in true bull fashion to their collective destiny. Together, they made a momentous sight: the Rider and the Ride.

PARVATI - THE ONE HE LOVED IMMENSELY

PARVATI - THE ONE HE LOVED IMMENSELY
The one person that Shiva loved meeting in this cosmic mind field, the one person whose memory He would not allow to fade even when they were not together, was, unchallengeably, His Woman. In a whole universe that had been projected by Him, She was the one being He loved immensely.
Parvati, His inseparable better-half.
Parvati, without whom, Shiva felt like ‘not Shiva’.
Parvati, without whom, Shiva didn’t feel anything at all.
Parvati, without whom, the Seers summarized, “He was Shava, a corpse.”

A TIMELESS LOVE

A TIMELESS LOVE
Personally, His mind always went out to two things: The first were the snow-clad mountains He could see but did not know.
The other, the woman He knew, but could not see.

SHIVA'S STRENGTH

SHIVA'S STRENGTH
Suta ji tells Shaunaka of Shiva's strength.

THE FRUIT OF SOUL YOU CREATE .

THE FRUIT OF SOUL YOU CREATE .
In silence He waits, where the mountains and valleys meet,
Waiting in silence, for the sound of Shakti's feet.
No throne, no kingdom - just love and faith,
What to offer, but the fruit of soul you create.

WHO IS GOD SHIVA?

IN THE BEGINNING

(An introduction to Lord Shiva)
by author Shail Gulhati

Who Is Shiva?

TRANSCENDENT GOD
Shiva is the timeless God of the Universe.
Before even the creation of our world, He alone exists; as Existence itself,
and can be understood as the Ultimate transcendence, the Supreme Being..

PERSONAL GOD

This Supreme Being, wants to become something,
The Upanishads say, in the beginning was the One. He looked around and saw that there was no one else. He felt alone and thought, may i be two, may i, be many!
Actually God wanted to be loved. And that is why he created, simply, To love and to be loved.
So, He manifests the world as we know it,with himself the projector,
but alongside all that he creates,he enters the project as an embodiment,
much like the director taking a role in his own play! this is the step from Being to becoming.
Once he Enters His own creation as an embodied being, He now involves himself in meditating and re-connecting with his transcendent Godness,
Such connecting is termed as “Yoga”,and so, Shiva who is the Yogi par excellence, is replete with Divine knowledge and power.
Shiva constantly deploys his powers and wisdom, his Godhood,to uplift all his children , In this,he is goodness personified, and many who have faith in his immanence, worship him as their personal god. Shiva, therefore, also means , simply, the Auspicious, and we understand that Godliness is Goodness.

WHY THEN, IS SHIVA KNOWN AS THE DESTROYER?

Hinduism believes that the processes of God are principally threefold:
Creation,Preservation, and Destruction. It further believes, that God optimizes his attributes in a particular manifestation to enable the execution of a specific process with the greatest efficacy,
Thus Brahma is the creator of the world, Vishnu incarnates time and again , for he is it’s preserver.
Which , in some thinking leaves Shiv (शिव as his name is pronounced in sanskrit) as the destroyer at the end of a world cycle.

However, this is one view. Those who know Shiva better (the shaivites), see His role in a different way:
In a world full of changes, something must mark the parameter of permanence, and that permanent principle is Shiva. Shaivites prefer to understand Him as the
"Re-absorber". Their view is :

THE SHAIVITE BELIEF

Shiva is one of four main Gods of Hinduism, the other three being Brahma, Vishnu and Devi, Shiva’s consort Herself.
In the beginning, only Shiva Was. He is endowed with immense power,Shakti, which is none other than Devi, the eternal consort. The two are inseparable, like any one thing and its inherent nature, like Sun and light, Fire and warmth , Moon and Shine, stars and night.
So, when we say only Shiva 'was', it automatically, means only ShivaShakti IS.
God, and Mother Nature “In-here” in each other as one.
Where there is God, (creator) there is creation(Nature), where there is Nature, you can be sure, God too, is here!

DHYANASTHA SHIVA (Click on the pic to enlarge)

Now, in the Shaivite view, They (Shiva and Shakti) create Brahma and Vishnu. Brahma creates the world, and enters it, so does Vishnu enter it ,and, yes, So do Shiva and Devi, as his loving ,inseparable wife, Parvati. Most of us know Shiva from here,in his popular depiction as Shiva, the Yogi.
He is dhyanastha-meditative,mindful, beneficent, always immersed in transmitting spiritual guidance, sharing many methods of attainment.
Ultimately, at the end of life, all is absorbed back to him, but, those are lucky, who get absorbed in Godhead in their current birth, whilst retaining their body, that is, before actually dying. This is real attainment. This is real Moksha and jivan mukti for a lover of Shiva.

LEARNING SHAIVISM

So,to one who wants to learn of Shiva’s mysticism, destruction does not mean ‘finishing of the world’, It rather connotes the ending of ignorance and falsehood,It is the ending of identifying too much with the finites. Therefore, interestingly,Shiva guides us to higher wisdom not by giving things, but by the ‘taking away’ of junk messages that have accumulated in our minds through ages, much like a computer vendor cleans up your personal computer to make it efficient and new , once again. These junk messages may have resulted not only in personal misery, but also creating chaos and disharmony when we come together in collective societies. So too, Shiva is Hara,'the taker away" in taking away, He gives! Ignorance goes, Godhood returns.

WHAT DOES SHIVA TAKE AWAY?

Foremost amongst our errant conditionings, is:
We think we are distant from God.
Shiva ends the delusion that we are only body and mind, distant from God.
Ending of delusion, ends limitation. So if there is something Shiva does destroy, its your limitation:
Shiva destroys your sense of separation from Shiva !
He tells you that you are one with God, you always were, and you always will be, because, there is nothing that can exist outside of God!
Shiva teaches "God is nearer to you than your very breath"
for simply understood, is not God the breath in you?
And thus, Shiva begins to remind us of where it all began….

He teaches that we, in fact, are made of the same ShivaShakti principle that began the world.
All creation is from one source and that there are no two different origins. This makes him the teacher divine, Shiva Dakshinamurti. He who taught without taking a fee. Thus too His Bhakts ( devotees) and lovers call Him शिवजी Shivji, Ji is an honorific. I spell His name shiva with an "A" at the end , only because i write for an International audience, who pronounce it that way. Names dont matter, The essence does.
Aum Namah Shivaye! We salute the Great Adi Guru.

SO IT SEEMS

SO IT SEEMS
So
it seems
the gist of the world
is simply this:
We are but a beam from your mind,
a thought.
But there is a game.
and as we play ,
we need somehow, to slip
into your heart
just so you may find,
and fix a dream
into your eternal day.
Sometimes, life can become like a dream
where day after day, night after night, things repeat.
Things repeat at a personal level, and we call it routine.
Things repeat at a Universal level, worldwide, and we call it the Times, good or bad.
All Shiva says, is wake up to the origin, wake up to me.
Instead of always focusing outwardly, look deep within and see.

Matrika, the Universal Mother- ज्ञानाधिष्ठानं मातृका

 JNAN ADHISHTAAN MATRIKA

ज्ञानाधिष्ठानं मातृका

The Siva Sutras teach that Matrika, the Universal Mother,is the master director of the triple knowledge consisting of Anava mala, Mayiyamala and Karmamala. When Universal energy is known in a correct way, it is Svatantrya Sakti,When it is known in a wrong way it is energy of illusion and it is called Maya Sakti. So Matrika is both the one who binds and the one who frees you.

It is the Un- understood Mother that is the basis of the limited knowledge. She ( Matrika) brings about knowledge in a limited form, e.g. ”I am imperfect”(anavamala), “I am thin or fat”(mayiya mala), “I am doing an engineering job (karma mala) and by penetration in the minds of the listener, brings about a feeling of sorrow, pride, joy, and passion.

Therefore Matrika Sakti is the Hetu (cause) of all creation and limitation, and She is always seated authoritatively, in the midst of all this confusion and ignorance ,reduction and limitation, as the Queen Mother who is waiting to be re-cognized by the sadhaka.

The most amazing miracle is that by studying and practising Shaiva sacred literature like Siva Sutras. Prtyabhijna and Vijnanbhairava, we get to the ultimate Transcendent world of Shiva's Divinity, through the recognition of Shakti pervasive in our own manifest world!
Aum Namah Shivaye.
~ Shail Gulhati: Shiva and Mysticism.

NANDI'S GAME

NANDI'S GAME
Nandi loudly declared, “My Lord, are you ready to play a game with Her Majesty, Queen Parvati?”
“Hmm… okay,” said Shiva.
“lets play an ancient game, my Lord. One, that I have no doubt you will enjoy playing. It is called, simply, ‘Find Me’.”
This ring will show which one of you found the other through love,” said Nandi, putting the ring into the milk plate. and then added loudly, “Aum Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye! Aum Triyambakam yajamahe!

SHIVA PARVATI- THE FIRST MEETING

SHIVA PARVATI- THE FIRST MEETING
Shiva noticed how extraordinarily beautiful Parvati was, when She spoke animatedly, completely absorbed in the argument She was making. He smiled. “I guess you have a point there, young lady.”
“And?” Parvati smiled back.

MOTHER OF ALL REDRESSAL: DURGA

MOTHER OF ALL REDRESSAL: DURGA
“Arise, O Yogini! You have prayed to me in the deepest solitude for more than five hundred years. You have not been bothered about hunger, nor have you let the changing seasons, the blistering sun, the thundering rains, or the biting cold affect you in any way. Not once have your lips stopped chanting, ‘Aum Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichaye Namah.’ So ask, O Devi, what do you want?”
“Aum Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichaye Namah,” repeated Mena.

SHIVA THE YOGI

SHIVA THE YOGI
Even as an adolescent, Shiva was of strong built. And soon He started becoming aware of His physique. Every morning, as He bathed under a favourite waterfall, He would take time to see His own reflection in the still waters of the pool. Sometimes He posed in techniques, which could be described as a yoga of flexing. The animals laughed, even as their doe-eyes widened in loving admiration.

SHIVA, DRUMMER OF MY SOUL

SHIVA, DRUMMER OF MY SOUL
Shiva!
drummer of my soul,
this is no dream,
ask my heart, where you lurk,
the woods are green.
And I have danced!
What of youth,
and life
and being
I am your very breath,
O King, of Kings,
Lead me gently now,
This world your dancing ring.
