The Benevolent Ma
Stambhan Vidya
Datia is a dusty little town in Madhya Pradesh. Pilgrims go there to offer puja to Ma Peetambara or Baglamukhi at the Peetambara Peeth in Datia. The temple is a shakti peeth established by Anant Shree Swamiji Maharaj several decades ago and has powerful patrons, including Gwalior’s royal family. Apparently, anyone in trouble can go and offer puja at the temple and the goddess helps the devotee to resolve problems and ward off enemies. for she is the stambhan vidya - stambh is pillar and stambhan vidya is that by which you can stop your enemies from harming you - in the tantra tradition of Dasa Mahavidyas. The place overflows with positive energy so the pilgrims always look forward to going there and offering their prayers. The best thing about the temple is that there are no blaring loudspeakers and no pandas or priests heckling you to offer pujas. People come here and sit in the courtyard or in the sadhana kaksh to chant their mantra. Devotees sit on woollen yellow asanas or spreads. The colour yellow is auspicious as it is also supposed to be the colour of the goddess — Peetambara stands for yellow — the asana is woollen so that it retains all the energy that descends on the devotee at the time of sadhana.
Puja After Sankalpa
The Peetambara Peeth is one of the primary places of Shaakta worship — worshipping shakti by chanting mantras to connect with the Divine Feminine. The sadhaks say their sankalpa or the reason for their sadhana by pouring water, little by little before and after reciting the mantra, on their palm from a small copper ghanti using a wooden spoon. According to tantra scriptures, no puja is complete till the sankalpa is done.
Getting There
The Datia railway station is three km from the Peetambara Peeth and the bus stand is just a km away.Autos are available from the railway station and the bus stand to reach the temple. Datia is 30 km from Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh and 75 km from Gwalior. Both these cities are well-connected by railways and roadways. The nearest airport is at Gwalior.
