Vibhuti is Shiva, Absolute Being, and Kumkum is Shakti,

“Karpura aarti is symbolic of the burning away of the mind by the light of illumination, Vibhuti is Shiva, Absolute Being, and Kumkum is Shakti, Consciousness. Vibhuti is of two kinds: Para Vibhuti and apara Vibhuti. The sacred ashes are of the latter class. The para is what remains over after all the dross has been burnt away by the Fire of Realization. It is Absolute Being.” ~ Sri Ramana Maharshi. Shivas entire body is besmeared with vibhuti. Shiva devotees generally apply Vibhuti in three horizontal lines upon the forehead. The three lines represent the soul's three bonds: anava, karma, and maya. Holy ash is a reminder of the temporary nature of the physical body and the urgency to strive for spiritual attainment and closeness to God. Kumkum is Shakti, Consciousness. It represents the Power of the Self, Knowledge, the real nature of which is Consciousness. Vishnu devotees will apply the three vertical lines. Aghori’s like to apply the vibhuti all over the body. Vibhuti comes out from the sacred fire or dhuni which is burnt by the Sadhus, Aghoris or at the religious ceremonies like Havana. It also comes from the sacred fire which is burnt in the temple. So it carries the spiritual vibrations and is good to apply it on the body as it activates minor chakras in your body and will also give you spiritual vibrations. It is considered auspicious and is a important religious ritual. Sandalwood paste is applied at third eye spot, because the cooling quality of sandalwood paste activates the third eye for meditators. it draws the attention of meditators on their third eye. For third eye, attention is food and thoughts are poison. so as you meditate more and have thoughtless experiences then the third eye will become more and more active. Before trying to activate your third eye, always first work on your heart centre and purify it. Don't have any malice, anger, jealousy or sexual feeling in you. always share love, compassion and positivity with others.
