Given the legend of Panchvati, the place holds a lot of religious significance even today. The Kumbh Mela takes place on the banks of river Godavari, and has pilgrims from every corner of world during the occasion.
The city of Nashik and and Panchvati has its own share of legends associated with it. River Godavari flows through Nashik and its Northern part is called as Panchavati. It is believed that when Lord Rama along with Maa Sita and Lakshman went into exile for 14 years, they made Panchavati their home. The word literally means 'Garden of Five Banyan Trees'. There are five Banyan (Vad) trees and hence the name panchvati. The trees can still be seen in the temple premises near Sita Gufaa and are believed to have existed even during the times of Ramayana.
Tapovan literally means precincts reserved for meditation and penance. It ahead of Panchavati. The sages used to meditate here in close proximity with the lush green nature. Lord Laxmana stayed here and had to cut nose of Shurpanakha, sister of Ravana. There is a gufaa (Cave) near the five Banyan trees in Panchavati. The cave has the idol of Shri Rama, Laxman and Maa Sita. To the left, one can enter into the cave having the Shiva Linga. It's the same place from where Ravan kidnapped Maa Sita.
The most important place in Panchavati is Ramkund. Lord Rama is believed to have taken bath there. Mortal remains (Asthi) immersed in this kunda, are immediately absorbed in the water. A dip in this sacred kunda is considered very pious. The ashes of Mahatama Gandhi were immersed in Ramkund after he passed away on 30th January 1948.! ✨👁🕉🌙🐍⏳🌀🔱🏯💀🏯🔔💀✨
