Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi symbolises the deity's rebirth and to represent new beginnings. Puranic sources tell us that Goddess Parvati created Ganesha from the dirt of her body. The story says Ganesh was created when Lord Shiva was away and Parvati was preparing to take a a bath. So the Goddess created Ganesha and placed him on guard. Ganesha followed her mother's instructions and stopped Lord Shiva from entering the home. Both Ganesha and Lord Shiva didnt know one another. Shiva became furious when stopped by Ganesha and cut off the head of Ganesha. Parvati was enraged and threatened to destory whole world. Everyone prayed to Lord Shiva the put the head of an abandoned elephant baby on Ganesha's body. All deities blessed Ganesha and thus we celebrate the day as Ganesh Chaturthi.

Madhyahna or mid-day is considered to be the most auspicious time since it is believed that Ganesh was born during that time of the day.

The festival ends after 10 days on Ganesh Visarjan, which is also called Anant Chaturdashi.
