Shiva is NĪLAGRĪVA-The Blue-Necked One.

The name occurs in the ancient Vedic invocation to Rudra, most famously in the Śrī Rudram: Nīlagrīvāya Śitikaṇṭhāya—salutations to the blue-necked, fair-throated Rudra, and is prior to even Samudra manthan. शिव नीलग्रीव हैं- नीले गले वाले

यह नाम रुद्र के प्राचीन वैदिक आह्वान में आता है, सबसे प्रसिद्ध रूप से श्री रुद्रम् में: नीलग्रीवाय शितिकंठाय श्वेत कंठ वाले रुद्र को नमस्कार। यह नाम समुद्र मंथन से भी पहले का है।
