Rahu approached Indra, king of devas, and complained that a monkey child stopped him from taking on Sun, preventing the scheduled eclipse. This enraged Indra, who responded by throwing the Vajra (thunderbolt) at Hanuman, which struck his jaw. He fell back down to the earth and became unconscious. A permanent mark was left on his chin ( hanu, "jaw" in Sanskrit), due to impact of Vajra, explaining his name. Upset over the attack, Hanuman's father figure Vayu deva (the deity of air) went into seclusion, withdrawing air along with him. As living beings began to asphyxiate, Indra withdrew the effect of his thunderbolt. The devas then revived Hanuman and blessed him with multiple boons to appease Vayu. Brahma gave Hanuman a boon that would protect him from the irrevocable Brahma's curse. Brahma also said: "Nobody will be able to kill you with any weapon in war." From Brahma he obtained the power of inducing fear in enemies, of destroying fear in friends, to be able to change his form at will and to be able to easily travel wherever he wished. From Shiva he obtained the boons of longevity, scriptural wisdom and ability to cross the ocean. Shiva assured safety of Hanuman with a band that would protect him for life. Indra blessed him that the Vajra weapon will no longer be effective on him and his body would become stronger than Vajra. Varuna blessed baby Hanuman with a boon that he would always be protected from water. Agni blessed him with immunity to burning by fire. Surya gave him two siddhis of yoga namely "laghima" and "garima", to be able to attain the smallest or to attain the biggest form. Yama, the God of Death blessed him healthy life and free from his weapon danda, thus death would not come to him. Kubera showered his blessings declaring that Hanuman would always remain happy and contented. Vishwakarma blessed him that Hanuman would be protected from all his creations in the form of objects or weapons. Vayualso blessed him with more speed than he himself had. Kamadeva also blessed him that the appeal of sex will not be effective on him. So his name is also Bala Bramhachari. ‪#‎TheShivaTribe‬ In this way all of the gods gave Hanuman either a portion of their power or else protection from their power. One version of the story concludes with Brahma making the following sage remarks ~ now hear this Pavanadeva, this son of yours will have the quickest and sharpest mind of all, he will be faster than anyone can imagine and he will be able to change his form at will. He will have tremendous courage and will be known by everyone. During the time of the battle between Rama and Ravana he will take on the form of Rama’s true and devout bhakta [one who performs bhakti]. In this form he will satisfy the spiritual needs of his own bhaktas by filling their hearts with adoration”

“He is the Supreme, in the midst of all beings,” ancient Seers noted in their historic notes.
“He is The God,” they emphasised, and in their tedious manuscripts, added, “Ultimately, of All things.”
“Time and again He has appeared on the scene and time and again, He has vanished. No one knows where He comes from.
The one thing that’s almost certain is, that even when He appears to us for the first time, the records of our forefathers remind us that He has been here before. He has been here before us all and so, no one knows where He comes from, or when He was born,” they repeated.

The Profound Symbolic Message of Shiva

For those who wish to go beyond the physical form, Shiva’s external appearance is a constant reminder of many fundamental truths. He is an embodiment of the three principal themes of Indian philosophy, which must be inculcated in our lives before any progress can be made on the spiritual path. 

1). Bhakti (Devotion): The Ganges flowing from his hair represents the stream of bhakti.

2). Gyan (Knowledge): Shiva is constantly engaged in inward contemplation, totally oblivious to what’s happening outside, so much that he even appears intoxicated to those not initiated into his mystery.

3). Vairagya (Indifference and disenchantment with all worldly things): Shiva often frequents the cremation grounds and smears himself with ashes. What better example could there be of disenchantment with the living world? Vairagya means sacrificing everything, and the one who even while living, gives himself up to the funeral grounds, not needing nor expecting anything from the world, is perhaps the ideal example.

As for the bull Shiva rides upon, ancient texts heap praise on it, calling it the Bull of Dharma:
Nandi (The Mount of Lord Shiva) ‘The bull of dharma has forgiveness for its horns, control of the senses for its ears, the eyes of faith and the Vedas as its breath. ~ (Shiva Purana Vidyeshvarasamhita:17.86).

Nandi was Shiva’s vahan.He was His most faithful attendant.

Nandi had the body of a human but the head of a bull. To make matters more intricate, the human part was built like a bull; the finest and most steely physique, and the bull head could think in the wisest manner possible. It was like magic. But then, that’s what the denizens of the jungle were. Magical creatures.
And Nandi had been declared by Shiva as the chief denizen, the Top Gana. Nandi was His best friend, His loyal devotee, and His vehicle for transport, all rolled into one.
He was Shiva’s ride, so to speak, but even when they were not journeying, Nandi would seat himself at the outer gates of Shiva’s chamber; He thought of himself as a guard, and was indeed, the most formidable obstacle to anyone who wanted to reach Shiva.
He was never off duty.
Once when Shiva joked with him about his snores that were louder than the roar of many creatures, Nandi had replied, “Even when I walk the streets of dreamworld, I proclaim Shiva as the Supreme Master of the universe, and whose chosen gana I am.”

It’s that time of year,
when all beings of the manifest world,
from ants, 
to birds, animals and even plants,
behave with a certain cheer,
as if cosmically 'stirred' out of their sleepy dormancy
into a mood of 'waking'.
We humans too find ourselves bubbly.
Winter has gone, and a sparkling Sun
is thawing its way, springing into a fresh sky.
And everyone seems to perceive that certain Divinity,
about the way Nature begins the season's regeneration.
Shiv Bhakts, in particular, seem doubly merry,
with a definitive halo of authority
that has recently dawned on their countenance,
getting into busy mode and frenetic festivity…

And why not?
It’s that time of year, when
in the dark half of 'Phalgun',
in English February or maybe March,
on the I3th or I4th day,
the longest night, which is also moonless and so the darkest
has come.
But behold, they say it is the great night of their auspicious Lord,
Shiva ratri, the beginning of all light.
Celebrated all over India,
in homes and in temples,
by the ascetics and the householders,
in sober prayer and in ecstatic intoxication,
by ritual and by trance,
in stillness and in dance,
and many things more.
It is attended by legends
of the wicked and the devout,
the sickly and the stout,
but none agrees on exactly what it’s about.

"It’s Shiva's birthday," say some.
Others swear it’s His wedding night with Parvati.
Some opine that is when the Ananda Tandava,
the first Dance, began.
Yet others teach of it as the profundity of awakening,
saying,
“It’s the celebration of the day Shiva was illumined
about cosmic mind,
a Primal consciousness,
His own rhythm Divine!”
