Once while Parvati was sitting alone on the Mount Kailash, sage Narada reached there. Narada knew that Lord Shiva knew the mantra (incantation) for becoming immortal (अमरत्वाचा मंत्र). He persuaded Parvati to get to know the mantra. So Parvati went to Shiva and insisted on knowing it. Shiva tried to avoid, but to no avail. Shiva wears a necklace of skulls. Each of those skulls is a symbol of different life of Parvati. So in a way, their love is immortal. So why does she need to know the mantra. etc. But Parvati continued to insist and now Shankara had no options left. So he agreed.
However, he wanted that no other mortal should get the mantra. For that, they had to go to a secluded place. Now which place other than Kashmir would qualify? They decided to go to Kashmir.
They reached Pahalgam. As per the standard version, Pahal Gam means “town of the shepherds”. However, the Hindus in Kashmir say that Pahal means Bull. So, Shiva left his bull Nandi behind. The place where he did that became Pahal Gam, “Town of the bull”.
At Chandanwadi, which means place where the sandalwood stays, Shiva left behind the Chandan (sandalwood) and moon. The locals say that at oone time, there was a forest of sandalwood in Chandanwadi which was destroyed due to indiscrete tree felling.
Then Shiva reached Pisu Top. There was a very thick forest there and Parvati was lost in the forest. Shiva ordered the jungle to find Parvati, but the jungle failed to do that. So Shiva opened his third eye and burnt the jungle. So now, you don’t find a single tree at Pisu Top.
A little distance ahead, Shiva left his snake, Shesh Nag, behind. That place is called Shesh Nag. At Panchtarni, he left Ganga behind. This way, he left all the living things behind.
He then ordered the Himalay’s to make a secluded place for them. So the mountain split making the Amarnath cave. There were two eggs of pigeon and an egg of a parrot on a tree in front of the cave. Somehow, a sage named Vasudev had heard that Shiva was going to tell the mantra of immortality and whoever heard that would become immortal. He entered the parrot’s egg. Using his special powers, Shiva burnt all the living things around the cave. However, since the eggs are neither live nor dead, they were spared.
Then Shiva started reciting the mantra. But Parvati was very tired and went to sleep. However, at that time, the pigeon’s eggs hatched and the young pigeons were making noises. Shiva thought Parvati was listening and hence continued.
When the mantra was over, Shiva saw that Parvati was asleep, so who was making the noise? At that time, he saw sage Vasudev running away. Shiva threw an arrow at him, but sage Vasudev entered the womb of a pregnant women. The gods told Shiva the futulity of trying to kill Vasudev since he had already heard the mantra. So Shiva took back his arrow. Vasudev came out of the womb and went to his heavenly abode with his body.
The locals here say that the two pigeons still visit the cave at midnight on every full moon.
Isn’t that a very interesting story.
The Shivling at Amarnath is made from ice and it’s not made by anyone. It’s formed naturally. The height of the Shivling changes as per the phases of the moon. I have seen a photograph of the Shivling. It looks like the shape above..

How can you fill a cup that's already full? Who can help you if you believe you've it figured out already?
Spiritual and religious texts expounding the Eastern thought are full of master-disciple stories of surrender and obedience. Many people who visit the ashram and many who write to me are inquisitive about the role of a guru on one's path, they ask me if it is necessary to surrender. Furthermore, a lot many admit having troubles in exercising complete surrender to any guru.
There are thousands of quotes in various texts that lay emphasis on the importance of having right guru. Is it truly that crucial? The answer is it depends on what are you after. If you simply need a teacher who can point you in the right direction based on scriptures and books, there is no dearth of such people. However, if you need someone who can demonstrate any bit of direct experience, someone in whose presence you feel safe, secure, loved, peaceful, you have little choice.
Guru-shishya, master-disciple, relationship has been around since time out of mind. Unfortunately, in this day and age, I see more exploitation than exploration. Majority of today's gurus are busy in worldly projects, they are selling merchandise, funding private hospitals that are run for profit, they are building ashrams everywhere they can, they are hoarding money, they are collecting profits, how close you can get to them often depends on how much money you have to offer. It pains my heart to see such fleecing and deterioration. Is there anything wrong with that? You decide.
If you meet someone who claims to be a God man, someone who is giving you the sacred diksha, initiation, without examining you, who is simply interested in what all you have to offer, who makes you feel unworthy, insignificant, who banks on your fears, I would say: abandon that person. He is a wolf in the guise of a sheep, a sinner in the garb of a saint. Never ever hesitate to ask questions. If the guru snaps at you, can he ever preach you eternal peace? If he is attached to his material things, is he the right one to teach detachment? If his negative emotions of anger, jealousy, hatred swell up like any other seeker, how will he ever get you to rise above them?
Before you exercise surrender or before you accept someone as your spiritual master, take your time, be critical. Who was Buddha's spiritual master? Mahavira's? No doubt Buddha, for example, studied and practised meditation, tantra, yoga and austerities under various masters, notably Alara Kalama. His own realization though came from treading his own path with utmost steadfastness.
You need not go looking for a guru, just stay sincere to your own path, to your practice of peace and love, of compassion and contentment; when you do that, the right guru will present himself out of nowhere. The providence arranges for it. Take my word for it. So is it necessary to surrender? And what if you cannot surrender?

Everything in the world is dynamic and changes.
“Prakcshakriycsthitishelam bhutendriyatmakam bhugapavargcrtham drushyam’’.
This seen world is eliminated. It conveys you a message. It gives you an idea of how great the consciousness is. Every aspect in the world is an expression of God. Everything is active. “Prakasha” means manifesting. Everything is manifested from the consciousness. We manifest, flowers come out. Everything in this universe is dynamic. It is not static. There is nothing that is static. Even though the mountains appear to be static, they are not static. They are all dynamic. Every atom is dynamic.
"Sthiti". They all undergo certain stage of evolution. Everything has a stage, has a state. Everything is governed by certain principles and certain qualities.
"Bhutendriyatmakam". The entire creation is made up of five elements. Five elements, five sense organs, five organs of perception and five organs of action. These are the ten organs. The entire creation is endowed by these ten. The mind is also a part of the creation.
"Bhoga apavargartham." This entire creation is there to give you pleasure and relief. Whatever gives you pleasure will also give you relief. Do you see what I am saying? Otherwise the pleasure becomes a pain.
It is like say, there are three apple pies. One, two, three apple pies, you love it. You will do anything in your life to have an apple pie or gulab jamoon. Okay you have it. But one, two, three, four and then the fifth one already becomes a little too much and then seven, eight, twelve, thirteen. The same thing which gave you pleasure is making you suffer. If you are forced to eat twenty apple pies, you will hold your head and say “Oh! my God. I want relief from this, I want to get away from these things. Enough is enough. I cannot hold any more”.

Regret and worry are a waste of time. Regret can't change the past, and worry doesn't change the future either. So just pray to Shiva. Shiva is your support. He is your strength. He has brought you through in the past. He is going to bring you through in the future also. Learn to trust him. Don't get discouraged. Realise You Can't Control Everything. We all know this at some level, but the way we think, act and feel, many times contradicts this basic truth. We don’t control the universe, and yet we seem to wish we could. All the wishful thinking won’t make it so. You can’t even control everything within your own little sphere of influence ; many things are simply out of your control. First step is realizing that these things will happen. There are things that we cannot control that will affect every aspect of our life. So learn to accept things as they are. Change your perspective. When you change , the world changes. The key to all change is our inner transformation, a change of our hearts and mind. This is human revolution. We all have the power to change. When we realise this truth, we can bring forth that power anywhere, anytime and in any situation. So just Breathe, and trust Shiva.
