Who Is Shiva?

Photo: IN THE BEGINNING
(An introduction to Lord Shiva)

Who Is Shiva?

TRANSCENDENT GOD

Shiva is the timeless God of the universe.

Before even the creation of our world, He alone exists; as existence itself,
and can be understood as the ultimate transcendence, the supreme being..

PERSONAL GOD

This supreme being, wants to become something,
The Upanishads say, in the beginning was the One. He looked around and saw that there was no one else. He felt alone and thought, may i be two, may i, be many!

Actually God wanted to be loved. And that is why he created, simply, To love and to be loved.

So, He manifests the world as we know it,with himself the projector,
but alongside all that he creates,he enters the project as an embodiment,
much like the director taking a role in his own play!this is the step from Being to becoming.
He now involves himself in meditating and re-connecting with his transcendent Godness,
Such connecting is termed as “yoga”,and so, shiva who is the yogi par excellence, is replete with divine knowledge and power.
Shiva constantly deploys his powers and wisdom, his godhood,to uplift all his children , In this,he is goodness personified, and many who have faith in his immanence, worship him as their personal god. Shiva, therefore, also means , simply, the Auspicious.

WHY THEN, IS SHIVA KNOWN AS THE DESTROYER?

Hinduism believes that the processes of God are principally threefold:

Creation,Preservation, and Destruction. It further believes, that God optimizes his attributes in a particular manifestation to enable the execution of a specific process with the greatest efficacy,
Thus Brahma is the creator of the world, Vishnu incarnates time and again , for he is it’s preserver.
Which , in some thinking leaves Shiv (शिव as his name is pronounced in sanskrit) as the destroyer at the end of a world cycle.
However, this is one view. Those who know Shiva better (the shaivites), see His role in a different way:
In a world full of changes, something must mark the parameter of permanence, and that permanent principle is Shiva. Shaivites prefer to understand Him as the”Re-absorber”. Their view is :

THE SHAIVITE BELIEF

Shiva is one of four main Gods of Hinduism, the other three being Brahma, Vishnu and Devi, Shiva’s consort Herself.

In the beginning, only Shiva Was. He is endowed with immense power,Shakti, which is none other than Devi, the eternal consort. The two are inseparable, like any one thing and its inherent nature, llike Fire and warmth !
So, saying only Shiva was, enigmatically and automatically, means only shivashakti IS.

God, and Mother Nature “In-here” in each other as one.

They create Brahma and Vishnu. Brahma creates the world, and enters it, so does Vishnu enter it ,and, yes, So do Shiva and Devi, as his loving ,inseparable wife, parvati. Most of us know Shiva from here,in his popular depiction as Shiva, the yogi.
He is dhyanastha, meditative, mindful, beneficent, always immersed in transmitting spiritual guidance, sharing many methods of attainment.

Ultimately, at the end of life, all is absorbed back to him, but, those are lucky, who get absorbed in godhead in their current birth, whilst retaining their body, that is, before actually dying. This is real attainment. This is real Moksha and jivan mukti for a lover of Shiva.

So,to one who wants to learn of Shiva’s mysticism, destruction does not mean ‘finishing of the world’, It rather connotes the ending of ignorance and falsehood, the ending of identifying too much with the finites. Therefore, interestingly,Shiva guides us to higher wisdom not by giving things, but by the ‘taking away’ of junk messages that have accumulated in our minds through ages, much like a computer vendor cleans up your personal computer to make it efficient and new , once again. These junk messages may have resulted not only in personal misery, but also creating chaos and disharmony when we come together in collective societies.
Foremost amongst our errant conditionings, is:
We think we are distant from god.

Shiva ends the delusion that we are only body and mind, distant from god.
Ending of delusion, ends limitation. So if there is something Shiva does destroy, its your limitation:
SHIVA DESTROYS YOUR SENSE OF SEPARATION FROM SHIVA.

He tells you that you are one with God, you always were, and you always will be, because, there is nothing that can exist outside of God!

‘Verily’,teaches Shiva, ‘God is nearer to you than your very breath’

for simply understood, is not God the breath in you?

And thus, Shiva begins to remind us of where it all began….

Shiva teaches that we, in fact, are made of the same Shivashakti principle that began the world.
All creation is from one source and that there are no two different origins. This makes him the teacher divine, Shiva Dakshinamurti. He who taught without taking a fee. Thus too His Bhakts ( devotees) and lovers call Him शिवजी Shivji,
Ji is an honorific.I spell His name shiva with an "A" at the end , only because i write for an international audience, who pronounce it that way. Names dont matter, The essence does.

Aum Namah Shivaya! We salute the Great Adi Guru.

THE SYMBOLISM OF THE SHIVLINGA

Photo: THE SYMBOLISM OF THE SHIVLINGA

The Shivlinga , is perhaps the most popular symbol of Lord Shiva. Worshipped equally popularly as the Image of Shiva Himself ,it is found in abundance, with some variance, the world over, appearing in different timelines, and in many different forms.
A most esoteric symbol, it conveys different understandings at different levels, just like God means different things to different people.
The paramount understanding is this: that God in His Transcendence, in His Pure formlessness, timelessness, is both unfathomable and immeasurable , God , as Nirakar, the formless, is un knowable in His Pristine realm of infinity!
But, this same God, is however, knowable in the finite world He creates and pervades.
Its great paradox is that it Gives Shiva the acknowledgement of being a creator, rather than a destroyer!

The Linga, (upper columnic portion) is transcendence,The lower receptacle is Yoni, the cosmic womb. Altogether the Shivlinga means to convey that the transcendent pervades the manifest world as immanence. God creates, and then is present in His own World.
This also gives us some insight into the often pondered question “Why does God create the world?”

Finitude, serves by contrast, the purpose of the infinite light to focus, on itself.
The Shivlinga therefore tells us that God creates this world, and then enters it Himself, in order to know Himself, explore Himself, and this is His great Leela.

Thus the shivlinga is a symbol of God’s creativity, immanence ,as also His transcendence. It also represents the perfect balance of Yin and Yang, potential and kinetic, male and female energy, and so, Shiva and Shakti itself.

Because its ‘made’ form ,devoid of any complicated sculpting, represents God in a simple, straightforward way, the Shivlinga is a favourite symbol.

9 Everyday Ab Exercises To Develop Core Strength

Photo: 9 Everyday Ab Exercises To Develop Core Strength

You don’t need to spend hours, or even minutes, at the gym doing ab workouts to get a six-pack. You’d be surprised by how often you can tone your six-pack in everyday life. If you use the following core strength tips to pay close attention to how you move throughout the day, you'll see amazing changes in your abs. Below is a list of simple tips that will help you tone your core:

1. Stand evenly on two feet.

How you bear your body weight is critical to attaining flat abs. Poor, imbalanced posture will inevitably get the best of your six-pack.

2. Fight post-meal food comas.

When you finish eating, battle your core’s desire to lapse into an inactive food coma. Instead, lift your navel towards your chin and pull it towards your spine.

3. Sit cross-legged.

When you’re at work, eating a meal, or watching a movie, try to sit in a cross-legged position. This will allow you to sit tall while avoiding loose ab syndrome. You’re either in the dark or your legs are hidden under a table, so forget about feeling strange (no need to feel strange about taking care of yourself). Often, I even take off my shoes to be most comfortable.

4. Use your core while doing heavy lifting.

When you’re picking up your kids, pets, boxes, or lifting work-related heavy loads, use your core strength for power rather than that of your legs or back.

5. Walk with confidence and pride as though the surface below you is unstable.

You'll immediately grow taller and slimmer as the crown of your head rises and your gait becomes lighter.

6. When you’re cooking, suck your abs away from the counter.

7. Watch TV at home lying down rather than seated.

It’s better to stretch out in a supine position, allowing gravity to press your abs directly down toward your body, than to let your six-pack disengage and slump while seated.

8. Strongly engage your abs during sex.

Sex with core strength is a great ab workout and also a fabulous pleasure booster.

9. If you teach yoga or fitness, make sure to use your core when you assist your students.

Not only will your abs get stronger but you will also protect your body form injury.

The Practice Of Meditation

The Practice Of Meditation

As with anything else, the more we practice meditation, the more we feel the benefit of what we are doing. We do need to practice meditation regularly because the habits of:

i. identifying with our physical form,

ii. succumbing to mental and emotional negativity (in the form of waste and negative thoughts) along with negativity in words and actions,

iii. becoming attached to the physical as well as the non-physical, and

iv. being dependent upon the experience of physical stimulation of any sort (from e.g. food, movies, people, sports etc.) for happiness are extremely deep.

These habits have deepened over a period of time, because of repeating them regularly, due to a lack of spiritual awareness. As a result, in the present moment also we regularly and quite easily slip into these four habits.

We regularly and quite easily slip into four main negative habits. So meditation is not only sitting in a quiet corner, and connecting with the self and the Supreme, at a couple of fixed times during the day, but it is also the way to gently remember and remind ourselves, many times in a day, that we as well as others, are souls or spiritual beings not physical beings, by detaching ourselves from actions and also while being involved in actions. These reminders given to the self over a period of time become natural and prevent us from succumbing to these four habits. Given below is a basic meditation, which you could use to remind yourself regularly during the day:

I have a body but this body is not me...
I have thoughts but these thoughts are not me ...
I have feelings but these feelings are not me ...
I have attitudes but these attitudes are not me ...
I have emotions but these emotions are not me ...
I have beliefs but these beliefs are not me ...
I perform many actions through my sense organs, but these sense organs are not me...
I play many roles but I am not my roles...
I experience joy or sorrow through my sense organs, but these experiences are not me ...
I am a soul - a being of energy, which is neither created nor can be destroyed, and my original and true nature is one of peace, love, joy and power...

Don’t Wait to be Happy

Photo: Don’t Wait to be Happy

We convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, then another.

Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, are able to go on a nice vacation, when we retire.

The truth is, there’s no better time to be happy than right now.

If not now … when?

Your life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway.

One of my favorite quotes comes from Alfred D Souza …

“For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.”

This perspective has helped me to see that there is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.

So, treasure every moment that you have. And treasure it more because you shared it with some one special, special enough to spend your time …and remember that time waits for no one …

So stop waiting until you finish school
until you go back to school
until you lose ten pounds
until you gain ten pounds
until you have kids
until your kids leave the house
until you start work
until you retire
until you get married
until you get divorced
until Friday night
until Sunday morning
until you get a new car or home
until your car or home is paid off
until spring, until summer
until fall … until winter
until you are off welfare
until the first or fifteenth
until your song comes on
until you’ve had a drink
until you’ve sobered up
until you die
until you are born again
to decide that there is no better time than right now to be happy

Happiness is a journey, not a destination!!
