SHIVA, AGHORNATH.

Photo: SHIVA, AGHORNATH. That Lord Shiva became a recluse when Sati died, is well recorded in His legend. It is said that He held onto Sati’s body for the longest time, in the greatest Moha, till Vishnu cut it up with his Sudershan Chakra into 51 pieces that fell on different parts of the Earth, resulting in the great Shaktipeeths ( places of Shakti worship). This beautiful statue shows Shiva’s unabashed tears , it is Probably a time between Sati and parvati. He is said to have abandoned Kailash and virtually disappeared into Oblivion. This appearance of not caring for his own self made him unrecognizable. He is even legended to have wept in Shiva temples, unrecognized, Visiting their own places of worship in remembrance. Shiva lost all interest in the world- His own world without Sati was finished. It is at times like this, when everything you loved is suddenly gone, that you come to your deepest questionings about life. Shiva, who was the Mightiest God, the creator of the entire Universe, was stunned at the loss of Sati, his beloved, and this must have been the greatest introspection for Him. It is very possible that Aghora practices were done by Him during this time, and thus the appearance. A complete withdrawal from the Universe of the outside, and the deep dive into the Inner Being, propelled by a great sadness. Surprisingly it is the word Ghor which means ‘terrible’ and the word Aghor, means a negation of terrible. So Aghora means that, which can finish the terrible (situation or state of being) . Shiva possibly learnt the maximum about His own spiritual power and Self during the Aghora meditations and practices. He continued his journey, and then, Passing Through the enchanted forest of Cedars, called Daruvana, he settled in an unknown part of the Himalayas and meditated for ages before Sati manifested herself again as parvati. Once He was back to His Ganas and followers in his own Habitat, again,it is very likely that Shiva, who was a great Guru, taught his greatest techniques, learned at this time, to a select few which made the Aghora sect. The most spiritually powerful, but also most terrifying Ganas of Kailash. Therefore , Aghoras were the foremost shamans to whom absolutely nothing mattered other than proximity to their Chief, Shiva, at all times. Over time, perhaps due to their appearance, the word Aghor got identified only with terrible things, people who could not fathom the deep inner practice that led to an unkempt outward presence, actually started thinking of the Aghors as Ogres. And this perhaps suited the original, and indeed spiritually superb Ganas of Shiva, who wanted to be left alone in their privacy of actually meditating and diving deep into their own Self. It is only because with the passage of time, we tend to copy outward ritual and forget the inner meaning, perhaps the newer Aghoris , as also their critics may have begun to think that unconventional habits are the right practice of Aghoris. And this has lead to all the fear and suspicion about Aghorism.But this surely cannot be the original abandoning spirit that Shiva Himself underwent, it is only the outer shell. Photo: • यदि कोई कहे कि ईश्वर तो निर्गुण और निर्विशेष है, वह तुमसे प्रेम कैसे करेगा ? तो साधक को कह देना चाहिए कि ‘भाई ! मुझे तो ऐसे ईश्वर की आवश्यकता नहीं है, मुझे तो वह ईश्वर चाहिए जो पतित-से-पतित प्राणी से प्रेम करता है | जो परम दयालु और सबका सुहृद है | अपने प्रेमियों को प्रेम का रस देने के लिए ही अवतार लेकर नाना प्रकार की लीला करता है’ | अवतार लेना हमलोगों की भांति कर्मवश जन्म लेना नहीं है, भगवान् का अवतार लेने का मतलब प्रकट होना है | उनका शरीर त्रिगुण माया का कार्य नहीं होता; किन्तु परम दिव्य चिन्मय होता है | • यदि भगवान् बिना हेतु के दया करनेवाले और पतितपावन नहीं होते तो उनको कोई प्राप्त ही नहीं कर सकता; क्योंकि संसार में कौन ऐसा प्राणी है जो पतित न हो | कोई नहीं कह सकता कि मैं पतित नहीं हूँ | पतित का अर्थ है अपनी जगह पर ठीक-ठीक न रहनेवाला | इस दृष्टि से हरेक मनुष्य पतित है |.....अतः साधक को चाहिए कि अपने को पतितजानकर और भगवान् को पतितपावन मानकर अपने को समर्पण कर दे | सर्वतोभाव से उनका हो जाय | तभी चित्त शुद्ध होगा | • भगवान् उसी पतित को मिलते हैं, जो पतित नहीं रहना चाहता अर्थात् पुनः पाप नहीं करना चाहता | ऐसे साधक को भगवान् परम पवित्र बनाकर अपना लेते हैं, परन्तु जिसको अपने पापों का पश्चात्ताप नहीं है, जो उनको छोड़ना नहीं चाहता उसे भगवान् नहीं मिलते | वैसे ही जिसको अपने गुणों का अभिमान होता है, उसे भी नहीं मिलते | साथ ही यह भी बात है कि जबतक साधक के मन में किसी दूसरी वस्तु की चाह रहती है, तबतक भगवान् नहीं मिलते | Om Namah Shivay ***Write " Om Namah Shivay " if you ask for God's blessing on your life today. Lord Siva Drinks Poison

Photo: :: Lord Siva Drinks Poison:: Once, the Devas and the Asuras had a formidable fight for a very long period. Many Devas and Asuras died in the fight. The Devas thought that they should prolong their lives by drinking nectar and then continue the war. They approached Brahma with this desire in view. Brahma said: “This work cannot be done by me. It can be done only by Lord Vishnu.” Thereupon, Brahma and the Devas approached Lord Hari in Kshirasagara. Lord Hari asked the Devas and Asuras to churn the ocean with the help of Mandaragiri as churning-rod and Vasuki, the serpent, as the rope. As they went on churning, poison (Halahala) came out first from the ocean. The terrible poison began to burn the people into ashes. The Devas, the Asuras and the Rishis began to fly away. Lord Vishnu was not able to destroy the poison. His body also became very black. He ran to Kailas along with the Devas and Brahma to see Lord Siva. He reported to Lord Siva all that had happened. Thereupon, Lord Siva collected the poison and kept it as a drop in the palm of His hand and swallowed it. Then Lord Vishnu and Brahma requested Lord Siva to keep it in His neck as a mark of their protection. Lord Siva did it accordingly. Due to the effect of the poison His throat became blue. From that day onwards Lord Siva is called by the name ‘Nilakantha’ (blue-necked one) or ‘Kalakantha Murti’. Then Lord Siva said to them: “If you churn again, you will get nectar and several other things.” They all started again the churning of the ocean and obtained nectar and many other things. Why we do the aarati?

Photo: Why we do the aarati? Having worshipped the Lord of love - performing abhisheka, decorating the image and offering fruits and delicacies, we see the beauty of the Lord in all His glory. Our minds are focused on each limb of the Lord as the lamp lights it up. It is akin to silent open-eyed meditation on His beauty. The singing, clapping(Bhajan), ringing of the bell etc. denote the joy and auspiciousness, which accompanies the vision of the Lord. Aarati is often performed with camphor. This holds a telling spiritual significance.Camphor when lit, burns itself out completely without leaving a trace of it. It represents our inherent tendencies (vaasanas). When lit by the fire of knowledge which illumines the Lord (Truth), our vaasanas thereafter burn themselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego which creates in us a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from the Lord. Also while camphor burns to reveal the glory of Lord, it emits a pleasant perfume even while it sacrifices itself. In our spiritual progress, even as we serve the guru and society, we should willingly sacrifice ourselves and all we have, to spread the "perfume" of love to all. We often wait a long while to see the illumined Lord but when the aarati is actually performed, our eyes close automatically as if to look within. This is to signify that each of us is a temple of the Lord. Just as the priest reveals the form of the Lord clearly with the aarati flame, so too the guru reveals to us the divinity within each of us with the help of the "flame" of knowledge (or the light of spiritual knowledge). At the end of the aarati, we place our hands over the flame and then touch our eyes and the top of the head. It means - may the light that illuminated the Lord light up my vision; may my vision be divine and my thoughts noble and beautiful.
