Sabarimala pilgrimage suspended for a day due to rain, red alert for Pamba dam
Braving inclement weather conditions and the Covid-19 situation, hundreds of devotees have been trekking the Sabarimala hills to offer prayers at the Ayyappa temple since it opened on November 16 for the two-month-long annual Mandalam-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.

Pilgrimage to the famous Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala hill in Pathanamthitta district has been suspended for a day on Saturday due to heavy rain in the district and the rising water levels in major rivers, including Pamba. The order was issued by Pathanamthitta district administration on Friday.
Pamba, considered a holy river, is swollen and the Pamba dam (where red alert status has been issued) will be opened later in the day, said the district administration.
The situation in other parts of state is stable.
The Pathanamthitta administration said that red alert status has also been issued for Kakki-Anathode reservoir. "In order to ensure safety of pilgrims, it is hereby declared that the pilgrimage to Pamba and Sabarimala tomorrow (20-11-2021) is prohibited," the order issued by District Collector Divya S Iyer said on Friday.
She said the pilgrims who have booked a slot via the virtual queue system will be given an opportunity for "darshan" in the nearest possible slot once the weather conditions turn conducive.

- Pay money to perform Panchagavvyam poojai at will.
- Perform Madhurabishekam or honey bath to the lord, for arogyabhaagyam and kutumbakshemam
- Perform Kalabhabhishekam or Sandalwoodpaste bath to the lord, for curbing trouble from law and enemies.
- Atleast feed 3 or 5 people with full meals, prior you have your mid day lunch.

TIRUPATHI FLOODS UPDATE : Flood Fears After Water Leaks From Cracks In Andhra's Biggest Reservoir

The temple town of Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh has been flooded for four straight days now, with fresh fears around cracks developing in one of the biggest water reservoirs in the state that's located in the district. No fresh downpour has been reported but breaches on highways and other roads have cut off several villages that still remain inundated. Three airforce helicopters have landed at the Renigunta airport. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) forces have also arrived at Tirupati.
At Ramachandrapuram in Tirupati, some cracks developed in the bunds around Rayala Cheruvu, one of the oldest and biggest reservoirs in the state, and it started leaking leading to fears there could be a sudden deluge into the surrounding villages. Public warnings have been issued asking people to carry essential items, documents, and move to higher locations. "The bund is in danger of breaking. Please leave as soon as possible. Please leave the village. Please co-operate. Take your valuables and documents and leave. Inform your relatives. The bund is in danger of breaking. Please leave," an official was heard announcing in the area.
District Collector Hari Narayanan, the district police, and revenue officials along with irrigation team officials have inspected the area and asked all downstream villages to be evacuated as a precautionary measure.
"This is the biggest tank in the district. It is a very old tank. There is a small leakage. So we don't want to take any chances. So we are shifting villagers to safety," Collector Hari Narayanan said.
"There is 0.9 TMC water in the reservoir. There is overflow. We have to be careful as so much water has never come into this water body and it was not built to take so much water. So downstream villages have been asked to vacate by the district administration,'' special officer Pradyumna said.
"We are also talking to structural engineers to know if something can be done to prevent any break in the bunds,'' he added.
In the Chittoor district, a large volume of water from upstream and from Tirumala Hills had led to the Swarnamukhi river going into spate, filling the reservoirs and causing flooding. The soil in the reservoirs has become hyper-saturated with water. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy had conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas of the state on Saturday morning.
At least 24 people have died in the state and many are reported missing in floods that affected the Rayalaseema region of the state. Several districts have suffered extensive damage after rains brought in by two depressions that developed in the Bay of Bengal lead to torrential flooding.Dramatic visuals of a chopper carrying out rescue operations for 10 people stranded on a JCB excavator in the middle of torrential floods in Anantapur made news headlines on Saturday. 12 people who had taken shelter on top of three buses in the Rajampet Mandal of Kadapa district were not so lucky and couldn't be rescued. They are feared dead. In Anantpur district, five people died in a house collapse.
The South Central Railways had cancelled 22 trains and diverted or partially cancelled multiple trains. The track between Nandalur and Razampet was damaged. - NDTV

TIRUPATI: Tirupati’s new-found image of being a Smart City got drowned in floods as rain lashed the pilgrim city for the past few days and the scenario worsened from Wednesday night to Thursday.
Tirupati saw flash floods on Thursday due to heavy rain under the influence of a low-pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal. The deluge and devastation exposed the gaps in the civic armour and question marks were raised on the unplanned spending of taxpayers' money through the Smart City project initiated by the Modi government at the Centre in 2016.
Images and videos of the flooded pilgrim city were viral on social media, showing even the small rivulets turning its course onto roads, drowning parked vehicles and buildings and troubling people and cattle as well. Pained and panicked with the chaotic scenes, the denizens began pointing accusing fingers at the civic corporation and the urban development authority.
They noted that there was nothing smart about what was done by the authorities by way of rain-preparedness other than wasting hugs sums from the exchequer.
“We have been requesting the civic authorities to build a proper drainage system in our colony for a long time but to no avail. Even when the city has heavy rainfall for a brief period, rainwater gushes down the Tirumala hills and the drain water inundates the roads in Madhura Nagar,” said a local resident.
On Friday, while some were busy drying their essentials and electronic items in the Sun, others were looking at the sky, praying that there be no more rain and Thursday’s havoc does not repeat.
It was not just the excessive rainfall that caused the flash floods. The city received the 35th highest rainfall in Chittoor district from 8.30 am on Thursday till 6 am on Friday. A rainfall of 100.2mm was recorded.
Experts say the reason for the unprecedented flooding this time was the shrinking of open spaces set in the seven hills, the buildings constructed on rivulets and small ponds on the town’s outskirts and encroachments blocking or changing the course of normal water flow.
“In the last few decades, many stormwater drains and watercourses have been concretised. This led to the gushing of water and flooding in lower areas. Many natural water collection centres or ponds have been usurped on for real estate development or other purposes.
On the outskirts of the city, like Thummalagunta Cheruvu, many ponds are now sites for buildings, parks and playgrounds,” locals observed.
The situation in the city on Friday morning was that every nook and corner was flooded. This was so even in areas that had well-constructed drainage systems.
