Who Am I?

Shiv Shankar Daily's photo.

Keep asking yourself this question again and again – “Who am I?” This itself paves the way for going deeper into meditation. Just keep aside whatever you think of yourself or what you feel you are. This question cannot be answered through words. One who answers it through words does not truly know. This question is very important. So keep asking this question to yourself again and again – be it a hundred or a thousand times, over and over.
Then ask yourself, “Why am I?” I would say first you should know who you really are. Then think over why you are, and also why you are not. Think whether there is anyone for whom you are not (in existence).
You are not here to be troubled, you are not here to disturb others either. You are not here to simply eat, drink and sleep from one day to another. You are not here to gossip. So when you think deeply in this manner, you will slowly begin to understand why you are here. Start making a list of all the things you are not. Go on negating one (identity or label) thing after another that you are not. Then you will know why you are here, and that you are here to be useful and be of help to others around you, and for yourself as well.
When a few people get comfort and relief because of you, then the happiness and contentment that you get cannot be expressed in words at all.

Q: If the soul is so wonderful then why has God chosen to burden the soul with the material world?
Guruji: Have you seen movies? There is a hero and a villain in the movie. Now what is the role of a villain? He creates some kind of entertainment. When do you feel your body is a burden to you? When you feel that your body is a suffering to the spirit. But you can’t call it a burden when it is a means to elevate the spirit. When you know the body is given to you as an instrument to elevate the spirit, would you still call it a burden? Shareer maadhyam paro dharma sadhna- This body is an instrument for dharma, all that uplifts the spirit. Don’t consider it a burden. Honour your own body. The soul comes to your body after great effort. There is a great rush. Many souls compete to get one body and one succeeds. So our body is a gift and not a burden.

Leave the small things and think big. Think what can we do for society, for the country, for the world. In this way, you must have a big goal in life.

Q: Today becoming Gurus have joined market bandwagons. How we should decide which Guru to join?
Guruji: You have to listen to your conscience. It is just like joining to a particular course in the University where several courses are running parallel.

It is impossible for you to give more love to yourself. It is like ocean wanting to give more water to itself. In fact you love yourself too much and that is the problem, you're only thinking about yourself. Start thinking about everybody else, and give love to others. You are 'love' my dear, just relax and reduce your wants.
