Asceticism is defined as renouncing worldly activities and undertaking physical, mental and spiritual austerities as a means to become closer to God. Ascetic is one who follows a life characterized by severe self-discipline and abstention from all forms of indulgence. Lord Shiva is described as truly ascetic and the god of destruction. He is always meditating. Lord Shivas matted locks symbolise the aim of yoga that involves the integration of the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of life. Also ascetics wear their hair matted as a sign of renunciation. And Shiva is often unclad. This symbolises the transcendental aspect of Shiva. His body is smeared in white ash from the cremation grounds. This symbolises his liberation from physical phenomena and the material world. Sects of Shiva-worshipping ascetics, such as the Nagas, emulate their Lord by wearing little clothing, smearing ash and visiting the cremation grounds as well!!
