List of 52 Hukumnamas by Guru Gobind Singh Ji

"Sava lakh se ek ladau,
tabay Gobind Singh naam kahau."
 An unparalleled warrior, a renowned poet, a great philosopher was born to the ninth guru of Sikhs, Guru Teg Bahadur Singh ji and Mata Gujri in 1666 at Patna Sahib who was named Govind Rai and later came to be known as Guru Gobind Singh ji, the tenth guru of Sikhs. He always kept a strong foot against njustice and preached to abandon idol worship, expelling out irrationality and superstitions thereby promoting faith in one being who is thy creator and preserver of all. In 1699, he founded the “Khalsa”. When a person attains enlightenment and feels that he is ready to walk the path as carved by Guru Gobind Singh ji, he goes for the Khalsa baptism which includes ingestion of Amrit and a vow to abide by the teachings and climbs up a notch to become Khalsa from a Sikh.
 Here is a list of 52 Hukumnana( the teachings by Guru) which is also known as Sikh Code of conduct that should be abided: 
  1. Dharam dee kirat karne (Earn a living but with honesty) 
  1. Dasvand dena ( A tenth share of earning should be donated to the underprivileged) 
  1. Gurbani kanth karni (Acquire gurbani by heart) 
  1. Amrit vele uthna (Wake up early morning) 
  1. Sikh sevak di seva ruchi naal karni (Serve the sikh who serves others) 
  1. Gurbani de arth sikh vidhvaan toh parhane (translate Gurbani and learn its true essence by the learned ones) 
  1. Panj kakar de rehit drirh kar rakhni (Preserve the five articles of faith) 
  1. Shabad da abhiaas karna( practice the shabad or the holy hymn in real life) 
  1. Sat saroop satgur da dhyan dharna (Ruminate the truth of thy creator) 
  1. Guru Granth Sahib ji nu guru manna (Let thy teachings of Guru Granth Sahib ji be your guru that you have to worship and abide) 
  1. Karjaan de aarambh vich Ardaas karni (begin any and every work with Ardaas) 
  1. Jaman, maran ya viah mokay jap da paath kar tihaaval kar anand sahib dia panj poriya, Ardaas, pratham panj pyare atay hazooree granthee nu varta ke uprant sangat nu vartauna (From giving names to the infants to funerals of marriage ceremonies, recite Japji sahib first followed by Anand sahib and Ardaas and then distribute parshad to the panj pyare, the granthi and the sangat) 
  1. Jab tak karah parshaad varta rahay sadh sangat adol bathi rahay (the sangat is said to remain seated until the parshad has been served to everyone) 
  1. Anand viah bina grahast nahi karma (without Anand marriage ceremony, relations should not occur) 
  1. Par istri, maa behen, dhee behen, kar janani. Par istri de sang nahi karma (Other than your wife consider every female as your mother and sister) 
  1. Istri da mooh nahi phitkarna (Respect your wife and never subject her to any sort of abuse) 
  1. Jagat jhooth tambaako bikhiya da tyaag karma (Abandon lies and tobacco) 
  1. Rahitvaan atay naam japan vale gursikh di sangat karni (Be in company of thy fellow who stays in rehet and recites the name of the lord) 
  1. Kum karan vich daridar nahi karna (Do your work efficiently and give up on laziness) 
  1. Gurbani di katha te kirtan roz sunna te karna( Recite and listen to the kirtan and katha of Gurbani everyday) 
  1. Kisi di nindya, chugli atay eirkhaa nahi karni ( Never resort to jealousy, animosity and talking behind back) 
  1. Dhan, jeevan te kul jaat da abhimaan mahi karna ( Never be boastful about yourlife, money and caste or creed) 
  1. Mat uchi te suchi rakhni ( Keep your thoughts pure and high) 
  1. Shubh karman te kaday na itrana (never take a back seat and always go for ethical work) 
  1. Budh bal da data waheguru nu jaanna (Know that waheguru bestows with wisdom and intellect) 
  1. Sugandh de kar itbaar jannaun wale te yakeen nahi karna (never trust the person who has sworn in his sincerity) 
  1. Sutantar vicharna. Raj kaaj de Kaman te dusre muta de purshaan nu hook nahi deni (Practice independence and never give power to the person of other religious faith while governing religious matters) 
  1. Raajniti padhni (Study and know about the politics and government) 
  1. Dushman naal saam, daam, bhaed, aadiak, upa vartne atay uprant udh karna (Use all the stratergies and drain out all of the techniques before plunging into war) 
  1. Dusre mataan de pustak, vidhya padhni. Par bharosa drirh Gurbani, akal purkh te karna (Do read other holy scriptures and attain wisdom but have faith only on Gurbani) 
  1. Shashtar vidyaa atay ghoray di sawari abhiyaas karni (Practice the use of weapons and horse riding) 
  1. Gurupdesha nu dhaaran karna ( Follow the teachings of guru) 
  1. Rehraas da paath kar, khadae hoke Ardaas karni ( After reciting rehraas sahib, stand up and perform Ardaas) 
  1. Saun vele sohila atay ‘pawan guru pani pita’ salok padhna ( Recite kirtan sohila and ‘pawan guru paani pita before dozing off to sleep) 
  1. Dastar bina nahi rehna (Never stay without the turban tied on your head) 
  1. Singha da adha naam nahi bulauna (Never call a Singh by a pet name or a nick name) 
  1. sharab nahi sevani ( Never ingest beverages with alcohol) 
  1. sar munae nu kanya nahi deni. Us ghar daivi jithe akal purkh di Sikhi hai, jo karza ai na hove, bhalae saubhav da hove, bibaeke atay gyaan vaan hove (Never give the hand of your daughter in the hand of a shaven man. Give her to the one who follows Sikhism and is full of wisdom and is disciplined) 
  1. Subah kaaraj Gurbani anusaar karne ( Perform all the work in accordance with Gurbani) 
  1. Chugli kar kisi da kam nahi bigaadna (Never spoil anyone work by talking behind their back) 
  1. Kaurah bachan nahi kehna (never utter a bitter word) 
  1. Darshan yatra gurudware di hi karni (Visit a Gurudwara only) 
  1. Bachan karke paalna (keep all the promises and never break them) 
  1. pardesi, laurvaan, dukhi, apung manukh di yatahshkat sewa karni ( Always help those in need) 
  1. Putraee da dhan bikh janna ( Never consider daughter as a property) 
  1. Dikhaave da sikh nahi banna ( Don’t be a sikh so as to only boast about it) 
  1. Sikhi kesaa swasaan sang nibhauni ( Practice Sikhism with full dedication leaving every strand of hair on your body in their natural form) 
  1. Chori, yaari, dhokha, dagaa bahee karna ( Never lie, cheat, steal or get into adultery) 
  1. Sikh da aitbaar karna (trust a sikh) 
  1. Joothi gavahi nahi deni ( Always seek truth and never support a lie) 
  1. Dhroh nahi karna (Never cheat) 
  1. Langar parshaad ik ras vartauna (stay unbiased and impartial while serving Langar and parshad thereby treating everybody as one)
