As per the Puranas, Maa Lakshmi incarnated several times. In her first incarnation she was born as the daughter of Bhrigu and his wife Khyati. Next she was born from the waters of milky ocean when the gods and demons churned it in search of the elixir of life and gifted to Shri Vishnu as a companion and supporter of His Dharma. She appeared with a lotus in her hand, hence she is also called Padma. Whenever Shri MahaVishnu incarnates on earth in a human form, Maa Lakshmi incarnates along with Him and plays her part in restoring Dharma. She incarnated as Padma When Shri Vishnu incarnated upon earth as Vamana, as Dharani when he incarnated as Parashurama, as Sita when he incarnated as Rama and as Rukmini when he incarnated as Krishna.
Laksmika means a mark, sign, or token is in Rik Veda and Nirukta. In older Sanskrit, it is usually used with "punya" meaning a good sign, good fortune, prosperity, success, or happiness in Atharva Veda. Maa Laksmi personifies wealth, riches, beauty, happiness, loveliness, grace, charm and splendour in Mahabharata. According to legend, she appeared at the creation floating over the water on the expanded petals of a lotus flower; she is also variously regarded as wife of Surya, as wife of Prajapati, as wife of Dharma and mother of Kama, as sister or mother of Dhatr and Vidhatr, as wife of Dattatreya, as one of the nine Shaktis of Shri Vishnu, as a manifestation of Prakriti, as identified with Dakshayani in Bharatasrama, and with Sita, wife of Shri Rama!
