Abhishek is a Sanskrit word denoting a devotional activity of giving Holy bath to a deity. It literally means “to cleanse.”


Abhishek is a Sanskrit word denoting a devotional activity of giving Holy bath to a deity. It literally means “to cleanse.” Before starting the ritual, a devotee washes his hands and pours water over the Shivalingam. However, this practice is not to cleanse the Shivalingam, as God doesn’t need any cleansing. He is the purest, but it is an implication of cleaning oneself. Later milk is poured on the ShivaLingam, which is a connotation of purifying one’s life and washing all the sins from oneself. Later one should chant 108 names of Lord Shiva.
Pouring milk on the Shivling is process of Abhishek. According to Shiv Aagam (Poojaa rules) Abhishekam is considered as one part of the Shodashopachaar Poojaa. Lord Shiva is pleased by the process of bathing. If you pour even a drop of water on shivalingam, lord Shiva will bless you immensely. Since Shiva is widely worshiped in the form of the Shivalingam, Shivalingam Abhishek is done with the prescribed ingredients:
Panchaamrit (mixture of five ingredients - milk, yogurt, ghee, honey and sugar candy)
Ghee
Milk
Curd
Honey
Sugar cane juice
Lime juice
Tender coconut water
Sandal paste
Ganga jal
