During Samudra Manthan, halahala, a deadly poison emerged which had power to spread and completely endanger life of all beings. All the devtas and gods requested to Lord Shiva to save the universe from deadly effect of the poison. Shiva took the deadly poison in his palm and swallowed it, holding it in his throat. Though it dint effect Shiva, the halahala was tremendously toxic. Its heat was enormous. So to calm down its impact, all the gods and Devtas performed Abhishek on Mahadev with holy water of Ganges.
