Ganesh Chaturthi Customs
Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with much pomp and show across the country. It celebrates Lord Ganesha as the god of new beginnings and the remover of obstacles. The rituals take place all through the 10 days, with modaks being offered to Lord Ganesha and later devoured by the devotees. The festivities begin months in advance with artisans making idols of Lord Ganesha and devotees cleaning and decorating their homes to welcome Bappa.
Beautiful pandals are created across the country in which Ganpati Bappa is placed. Devotees throng these pandals to pay their homage to Ganesha. It is observed throughout India, especially in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Telangana, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. In Mumbai alone, around 150,000 statues are immersed annually. Ganesha idols are placed in homes, or publicly in elaborate pandals or temporary stages.
With increasing environmental concerns, many people prefer eco-friendly Ganesha instead of plaster of Paris idols. These days, statues with seeds are also being made. These seeds will get to the soil after the immersion of Ganesha and would help in germinating a plant.
