Pongal or also known as Thai Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated by the Tamil community and it holds a lot of meanings. It marks the end of the winter solstice and the start of the sun's six-month-long journey northwards. It also marks the beginning of the Tamil month called Thai which is considered an auspicious month. Other than that, it is also a celebration to thank the Sun, Mother Nature, and the various farm animals that help in the contribution of a bountiful harvest.
Pongal is also the name of the dish made and eaten during this festival. It is a mixture of sweet boiled rice. It is derived from the Tamil word pongu, which means “to boil over”. It is usually prepared and eaten during the festival, and for the year 2022, it fell on 14th January 2022 (Friday).
Pongal spans over four days such as Bhogi, Surya, Maatu, Kaanum Pongal. Each day has its significance and importance to the community celebrating it. Hence, it is a very important festival to the Tamil community and a lot of rituals and fun activities are carried out.
