WORLD'S TALLEST MURTHI OF ARDHNARISHWAR IN SOUTH AFRICA (statute of Lord Shiva).
ShivaRatri : Shiva-Shakti goes 20 metres high in South Africa
Highest statue of Lord Shiva unveiled Johannesburg, March 10: The highest Shiva-Shakti statue in the world, towering 20 metres above the ground has been unveiled in South Africa.
Nine artisans from India spent 10 months building and putting the finer detail on the steel statue at Actonville in Benoni which features Lord Shiva on one half and Mother Shakti on the other.
“With so much emphasis in South Africa at present for the lack of respect for female gender, how appropriate for us as an organisation, to honour the females and the mother of our community, Shakti. We have a murthi that is half mother, half father, symbolising the equality of gender,” said Karthie Moothsamy, the Chairman of the Benoni Tamil School Board.
Moothsamy said he was inspired to motivate the project when he visited Mauritius three years ago and saw a huge statue there. “(We) would like to further engage with the Benoni Tamil School Board to explore opportunities for further developing the story around Shiva-Shakti to locate this within the bigger history and heritage of Gauteng and find a place for it within the domestic and international tourist market,” said Gauteng Tourism Authority representative Mathew Sathekge.
