Ma Durga slaying a demon.
Ma Durga slaying a demon. A fabulous and rare work by artist Sobha singh, dispalyed in the Amar Mahal Palace in my hometown, Jammu, which is also called the city of temples, because of its multitudes of structures and legends of God, particularly Ma Durga. The Dynasty of the Dogra rulers were noted for being very pious Kings. And even today the artifacts in their museum have splendid pieces dedicated to God.
The concept of Durga as a slayer, is perhaps the most Unique contribution of Hinduism to the understanding of the balance of Mother Nature: She is the Universal provider, she gives life to all, but, to keep the check and balance, Nature as God can also finish the term of a life, especially if it is not in harmony with goodness.
