"A stable person is just like a turtle, who withdraws all its organs and takes them inside the shell. Similarly a pious and stabilised person also withdraws the tendencies like lust, Anger, greed, ego, fear, hatred inside his body and doesn't allow them to rule over him. When the person detaches himself from all the worldly attractions and tendencies, he becomes a sacred and holy person. As he reaches near God, all desires vanish. And with the carnal tendencies, he is unable to control himself from getting sinful. The control over them leads him towards contentment, happiness, peace and devoid of desires and worries. His thoughts become pure and pious. Who wants to attain God should have control over all this. One who is above all these things will attain Me!" A realised person is one who has conquered the ego. In contrast, worldly persons are victimised by ego. The glory of a"man of perfection" is in transcending the ego. This transcendence is symbolised by Lord Shiva coiling a serpent around his neck as a decoration for His body. The serpent represents the ego. It is used for adorning His personality instead of destroying Him. Shiva is the master of false ego, He can be worshiped for removing that obstacle from our spiritual path. Even if one becomes highly elevated in mysticism, the final danger to salvation is false ego. So, for the spiritual life, false ego is as dangerous as death. Shiva is depicted with deadly serpents to signify that even in such a deadly situation, He is peaceful, since He completely mastered false ego. Ego is a serpent. This serpent harasses you with its venom of desires. Man suffers all his lifetime from the pressure of his own desires. When you conquer the ego the same ego that has degraded you into a limited existence now ‘adorns’ your personality. This idea is indicated by Lord Shiva coiling the serpent around his neck. He has total mastery over his senses, his desires and his ego!
