Even though Diwali is celebrated as Shri Rama returns to Ayodhaya, Maa Lakshmi and Shri Ganesha is worshipped on this occasion. According to One interpretation, there was once a poor Brahmin who was advised by a priest to worship Maa Lakshmi to gain wealth. There is also a legend that says Diwali falls during the quarter of the year when Shri Vishnu is sleeping. Shri Vishnu sleeps from the 11th lunar day of Ashadh (Shayani Ekadashi) to the 11th lunar day of Kartik ( Prabodhini Ekadashi). Diwali marks the death of many demons like Narkasur by Lord Krishna (Shri Vishnus Avatar) arrival of lord Rama (Shri Vishnu himself) to Ayodhya after killing Ravana and Lord Vamana (Here also Shri Vishnu) defeating the arrogant Bali. As the win over good over evil is said to bring prosperity, consort of Shri Vishnu, Maa Lakshmi is worshipped alone as Shri Vishnu sleeps during this period.
As per another interpretation, once Maa Lakshmi grew very arrogant about Her wealth and powers. She kept praising Herself to Shri Vishnu, claiming that She is the only one worthy of worship. She is the one who bestows everyone with money and wealth. On hearing the non-stop self praise, Lord Vishnu decided to get rid of Her arrogance. Very calmly, Lord Vishnu said that in spite of having all the qualities, a woman remains incomplete if she does not bear children. Motherhood is the ultimate joy that a woman can experience and since Lakshmi did not have children, She could not be deemed complete. On hearing this Maa Lakshmi went to Maa Parvati. She requested Maa to let Her adopt one of Her sons to experience the joy of motherhood. Maa Parvati was reluctant to let Lakshmi adopt Her son because it was known that Lakshmi does not stay in one place for long. But Lakshmi assured Her that She would take care of Her son and bestow Him with all the happiness. So Maa Parvati let Her adopt Ganesha as Her son. Maa Lakshmi said She will bestow Ganesha with all Her accomplishments and prosperity. Those worshipping Lakshmi for wealth would first have to worship Ganesha to seek Her blessings. Those who will worship Lakshmi without Ganesha will not blessed by the Goddess. Hence, Lakshmi is always worshipped along with Ganesha on Diwali. Gaining wealth without intellect will only result in misusing the wealth. So, one must first acquire the intelligence to spend the wealth in the right manner. Therefore, Lakshmi and Ganesha are worshipped together.!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
