Lord Shiva has been around for centuries. Lord Shiva actually transcends the time when Hinduism was established as an organized religion. The scholars argue about when Lord Shiva first came to be worshipped. The origin of Lord Shiva can be traced back all the way to a pre-Aryan period. Lord Shiva’s statues and carvings can be found as far back as the Indus Valley Civilisation! But one thing is clear that Lord Shiva was and is a supreme god.
One of the proofs of the existence of Lord Shiva indicating his origins can be found in Mohenjo-daro which is over 4000 years old!! Here Lord Shiva is seen in the form of Pashupati or the lord of animal like beings. The reason this proof, which is in the form of a seal discovered during a dig, is considered one of the earliest recordings of Lord Shiva is because of the figure carved out on the seal. The figure seems to be sitting in a yoga position with its knees out and its feet joined together and is surrounded by animals. Lord Shiva has been considered to be a Mahayogi who is credited with the invention of yoga.
The most well-known origin of Lord Shiva is of him as The Destroyer. When Hinduism was established as an organized religion, the Hindu Trinity was a very important part of it. Each one has their own place in the trinity and the each have their own duties to perform. Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu is the Preserver and Lord Shiva is The Destroyer. Many Hindus consider the avatar of The Destroyer as Lord Shiva’s origin. In the Rig Veda, there is mention of Rudra. Rudra is also another name for Lord Shiva. The Rudram, a sacred hymn that invokes Rudra also mentions Rudra as Lord Shiva in many different instances.
According to the Vishnu Purana, Brahma wanted to have a child and so mediated for many years. After his intense mediation, a child appeared before him crying in a loud voice. When Brahma asked him what was the problem was, the child replied that he was crying because he did not have a name. Then Brahma named him Rudra. But Puranas tell us then Lord Shiva has no origin. Lord Shiva has no beginning and no end. He is immortal and will live forever. He has not been born and so in essence, he cannot die.! πŸ‘πŸ•‰πŸ“ΏπŸ”±πŸ’€πŸŒ€πŸŒ™πŸšπŸπŸ””
