While fighting with Ravana, the King of Lanka, Lord Rama was able to shoot an arrow towards Ravana’s neck thus separating his head from his body. But to Lord Ramas surprise his head reappeared and the process kept going on.
On witnessing this continuation, Lord Indra asks Lord Brahma that why doesn't Lord Rama target Ravanas chest. Lord Brahma answers - “Ravana is so mesmerized with Mata Sita and she resides in his heart. Mata Sita resides in Lord Rama’s heart, while this whole universe in Lord Rama’s heart. So hitting an arrow at his chest would prove fatal to entire universe.”
Lord Indra asks “So isn't there any solution? Will this chain of cutting and the reappearance of his heads continue?” Lord Brahma says “The chain will continue until Ravana becomes restless and thinks of his life instead of Maa Sita, and exactly at that point Lord Rama would target his chest.”
Just when Lord Rama could not find a solution to Ravana’s defeat, Vibhishana whispers into Lord Ramas ear. He tells him of Lord Brahmas boon to Ravana, about the elixir of life (Amrita) in his navel. If that could be dried somehow Ravana would be defeated. When Ravana comes to know that Vibhishana has told this secret to Rama, he gets anxious. Lord Rama at that moment shoots at his navel, and dries the elixir.
This is the moment when Ravana thinks he's doomed, as he had been told by Lord Bramha that no god can kill him, but only Nar or Vanar (Man and Monkey) would bring his end. When these thoughts ran across Ravana’s mind he got restless and exactly at that point Lord Rama shoots an arrow aiming Ravana’s chest and kills him.
Ramcharitmanas mentions about Ravana’s killing stating that 31 arrows flew simultaneously out of Ramas bow, 10 had cut the heads of Ravana, 20 had cut his arms and 1 hit the navel whereas Valmiki Ramayana mentions about a single arrow hitting Ravana's chest.
Jai Shri Ram
