Nandi is the ultimate devotee of Lord Shiva. hence the idol of Nandi is kept in the temple infront of Shivling. Lord Shiva gave a boon to Nandi that Nandi will also be seated at his place of residence, hence the establishment of Shivling without him is also considered incomplete.

Lord Shiva is always absorbed in samadhi. When the Lord conducts the whole world with closed eyes, then there should be no obstacle in his samadhi and austerity, so Nandi sends everyone's wishes to Shiva after the end of penance. It is said that the wish whispered in Nandi's ear reaches Lord Shiva.

Keep in mind that while saying any wish in the ear of Nandi, do not listen to anyone else. While speaking your wish, place one hand in Nandi's other ear and close your eyes and whisper your wish. Nandi must be worshiped before saying any desire in his ear. After this, speak your mind with confidence in the right ear. Lord Shiva will fulfil all your wishes.
