A beautiful picture of Ma Kali Atop Lord Shiva. It is one of the most enigmatic symbolisms of both shaivism and shaktaism. The katha (mythology) is that once Ma kali was furious with the evil ways of the world and was on a rampage to destroyit- ALL OF IT.
Nothing could stop her, but Shivji, in His great benevolence lied on her path. She was so full of anger that she didnt notice, till she stepped on Him. At that moment she realised her mistake and her tongue lolled out in a mudra of realising the error, much in the same way we say"i am sorry" .
She was thus stopped from her dance of destruction ,
and shivji saved the good people who would have also been destroyed.
But there is a deeper, more spiritual meaning also, which i will share with you.As we all know, Kali is dark, and shivji is the very light itself, the pure being.Light represents self illumination, knowledge, whereas darkness represents ignorance. We are all divine souls, coming from Shiv shakti itself. So too the Upanishadic rishi told us Tat tvam Asi
'that thou art'. But till the time there is a self reslisation in any being about the shiv tatva within Him, he remains deluded by Maya, the veil .So this picture also means to show the effect of maya on the soul, which can be unaware of its own grandeur for some time. Such is the leela of shivji and Ma Durga. Aum Namah Shivaya.
