A mega bell, donated by a King of erstwhile Nepal Monarchy about 100 years ago, is one of the antiques adding value to Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple at Rameswaram.

Much to the dismay of pilgrims and devotees, it has been in disuse for many years in spite of its perfect condition. It is kept at the busy Nandi idol in front of the presiding deity, and has been tied with a rope in order to prevent the devotees from ringing the bell.

It seems the bell's weight is about 1.5 tonne. The chiming can be heard around five square km radius of Rameswaram.

It was in use for many years by the devotees as it was positioned in such a way to enable them to ring the bell. It was also used by the temple staff for several years to ring the bell at the stipulated time schedule as per the tradition. However, the practice was stopped by the temple authorities several years ago, the reason for this is yet to be known.

“It is one of the important offerings received by the temple and it is one of the oldest antiques in the temple. "

  1. Hi..Nice blog post. Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple located on the island town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, is one of the four sacred Char Dhams in the country. If you are planning to go to Rameshwaram and are looking for accommodation, then Hotel Queen Palace Rameshwaram is a very reasonable option.
