Gajendra, was very great Bhakta and pious King elephant. when he would walk, even a great tiger, lions , rhinoceros, they would all stand aside in respect for him and the innocent animals like the rabbits and the foxes, the squirrels, they all felt completely happy and protected because they knew that Gajendra would not allow any unrighteous act to be inflicted upon anyone. Everyone respected him so perfect peace, perfect tranquility and perfect harmony prevailed. Gajendra thought he was the controller and the master of his destiny, not realising the nature of the material world, that calamity strikes any moment. No matter how perfectly we live our lives, however powerful, influential, wealthy, circumstances sometimes are beyond our control. Gajendra was taking bath in lake one fine day when the crocodile with his mighty jaws clenched the feet of Gajendra. Gajendra was in very great pain and tried to release himself from the mouth of the crocodile. But the more he tried, the crocodile tightened and tightened his grip and thus a great fight ensued.
Gajendra was thinking that he was the most powerful of all beings in the forest, which he was. But however great you are, there is always someone who will defeat you in due course of time. Gajendra began to contemplate. "what is the value of all these relationships, when at time of need none helps me. I have spent my whole life simply by attaching myself to all of these objects of affection and what can they do for me." Srimad Bhagavatam describes such associates as fallible soldiers. They are actually the army of maya. They give us a promise in illusory form of security but when there is a real need they cannot help. So Gajendra realised he had wasted his life clinging on to material world. He realised that only Lord could be his shelter.
Gajendra began to pray asking lord for his mercy. at the time of greatest distress when he had no one else to turn to, he looked within his heart and remembered the beautiful strotras, the beautiful slokas that he had memorised and learnt in an attitude of great sincerity for lord. He began to offer these beautiful prayers to the Lord. He wasn’t simply reciting but he was praying with his life and soul. He was expressing his helpless condition of life that he was turning to Narayana alone. Remember Lord always hears our prayers, He also hears everything else we say and he reciprocates accordingly.
Lord Vishnu descended upon his bird carrier Garuda. Although Gajendra was in a very painful condition, he plucked a lotus flower with his mighty trunk and offered it with great devotion to Shri Vishnu. Shri Vishnu came down his Garuda and to the amazement of everyone, He took His Sudarshan chakra and severed the mouth of the crocodile and took Gajendra to Vaikuntha. Hence granting Moksha to his sincere devotee.
Our tendency is to find comfort and security, to find shelter in illusions of this world. But there comes a time in our life when none helps us. Nothing can save us except whatever we have done for Our Lord. Shri Vishnu is our preserver, our caretaker. Shiva is merciful Bholenath, Devon ke Dev Mahadev! So we should know that ultimately we have to come to the platform of total surrender. It is the sign of greatest inner strength and will and it is the source of all peace, fulfillments and joy. There is nothing good, nothing bad. Every situation in life is a perfect opportunity to draw more close to Shiva, close to Narayana. When you remember that he is the cause of all things, however best or worst, we learn to accept every situation happily. When we fix our mind upon Shiva , We learn to welcome distress with love. Then there is no anxiety and there is no fear. Fear is due to darkness, fear is due to ignorance. And Shiva is Sun, Shiva is light, can darkness exist when there is light of our Lord? Shakti is our mother, Shiva is our Father, wont he protect his children? He is the cause of all causes. He is all that is. Everything is emanating from Him alone. He is the absolute truth that Supreme truth from whom all other truths are. Like they say, not a leaf can even move without His will. So Is there anything that can come into our life that is not according to His will? Therefore a devotee who has this faith, who simply sees Gods mercy everywhere, for him God is never far and God never loses sight of His true devotees!!
