Saakh symbolizes growth and abundance

Jammu Links News's photo.

Saakh symbolizes growth and abundance. Sand is usually excavated from the banks of river Tawi since Tawi is considered sacred and of utmost religious significance which is further mixed with small proportion of soil (traditionally the soil from the tulsi plant was used) and barley to form the foundation on which Saakh is sown and grown. On one side, a Kalash full of water along with Mango leaves in odd quantity is established and a raw coconut is kept on it. After establishing the Kalash, the Akhand Jyoti(lamp) of Mata Bhagwati is burnt. This Jyoti should burn for whole nine days and night.
After that Saakh is covered with the leaves of brankad bushes as a mark of respect and after 9 days of Navratras it is covered with a red chunari which is further worshipped and then immersed into the flowing water of river Tawi or adjoining canals or other flowing water bodies.
People percieve the size of Saakh to be proportional to the blessing bestowed by Mata Rani (Goddess Durga)on them.
