Lord Ganesha, with the head of an elephant represents the power of the Supreme Being that removes obstacles and ensures success in human endeavors. Hindu religious scriptures recommend the worshipping of Ganesha before the beginning of any religious, spiritual or worldly activity.
"Pranamya shirasaa devam gaurii putram vinaayakam
Bhaktaa vaasam smarenha nityam aayuh kaama artha siddhaye" ~ This stotra is from Narada Purana, and is recited to remove all troubles and get liberation. "one should bow one's head and offer obeisance before the son of Gauri, Vinayaka, whose abode is the devotees, and remember Him always for the purpose of obtaining longevity, desired powers and prosperity."
You don't have to be a Hindu to ask lord Ganesha for assistance. He is an all-loving God, available to assist anyone who will take the time to connect with Him. If there are obstacles that you are facing in life, if things are just not "going right," then turn to Ganesh and ask Him to help you. Take a few deep breaths, close your eyes and bring Ganesha to your mind. See his beautiful elephant-head, with welcoming eyes, large ears, long trunk and big, pot-belly. Now, simply speak to Him in HIS right ear. Just speak all of your concerns, worries, right into HIS right ear. Know that as you speak he is hearing you and that you are making a connection with him. That's it. Ganeshas Elephant head represents both gyan shakti and karma shakti. The principle qualities of the elephant are wisdom and effortlessness. The enormous head of the elephant signifies Wisdom and Knowledge. Elephants don't walk around obstacles, neither are they stopped by them. They just remove them and walk ahead – signifying effortlessness.
So, when we worship Lord Ganesha these elephant qualities within us are kindled and we take on these qualities.
Jai Shri Ganesha ~ Jai Shiva Shankar!
