Purmandal temple located on the bank of river Devika in Jammu, is considered as the hallowed place where the last rites of the departed souls are performed. Apart from this religious practice, Purmandal is believed to be a sacred place for not only Jammuities rather whole Hindu community. About the Devika river, it is said that people come from different places across the city for the holy bath with the intention to cleanse and purify their souls.
The current structure of temple is believed to be constructed by Maharaja Gulab Singh. The temple is prominent and is placed equal to Kashi of Uttar Pradesh. Besides the architecture, Purmandal is also known for the extensive display of wall paintings depicting stories from the holy past of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesha.
The faith associated with this place of worship is prevalent since ages. The temple is dedicated to the deity Umapati (Goddess Parvati). Devotees from different regions visit this holy place in order to pay obeisance and seek blessings from supreme Gods and Goddesses. The temple rose to prominence during Dogra rule in the state and it is said that the Shiv lingams originated at this very place and in local parlance, they are called as “Aap Shambu” lingams.
Purmandal has been a prominent “tirthsthan” and hundreds of devotees visit this place during ‘Shivratri’ and ‘Chaitra Chaudish’. Many legends from the history describe the significance of Purmandal temple. This place was once a centre for Sanskrit learning wherein scholars used to study divinely inspiring scriptures. Various rituals performed in the temple ensure purification of the soul following the standards set within Hinduism. So, Purmandal is not only an important religious structure but also a sacred place where various deities reside.
