It is Shiva who destroys what is no longer good or not needed in order to pave the way for rebirth. He can destroy bad karma when you are devoted to him and he can grant you long life. He crushes ignorance beneath his feet and loves his devotees so much that he grants blessings to even demons who worship him, without realising it.
It's With his blessings Sage Shilada got Nandi. Shilada underwent severe penance towards Lord Shiva, to have a boon (a child with immortality ) and got Nandi as his son. It is said that Nandi was born from a Yajna performed by the Shilada and his body was clad in armour made out of diamonds when he was born. Nandi grew as an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and he did penance to become the gate-keeper of the Lord Shiva as well as his mount.
In the temples of Shiva, you find Nandi, the bull in front of the deity. The truth is that just as Lingam is the symbol of the Lord (Eshwara), Nandi (Bull) is the symbol of Jeeva (Individual soul). Therefore just like the Nandi, man should turn away from Prakrithi and direct all his attention towards God only.
There are some more meanings for the symbolism. For instance, it is said that no one should stand between Shiva and Nandi. One should have the vision of Eshwara by looking through the space in between the two ears of Nandi. The underlying idea is that through the sadhana of using its ears to listen about Eshwara alone, the animal nature in the bull becomes transformed into Divinity and because of its merger with Eshwara it is called Nandeeshwara (Bull-God). Thus the lesson of the symbolism is that man should also try to merge with God, by following the example of Nandi.! 🐂🌀👁🕉🙏🏻
