Lord Shiva, the destroyer of evil, the forgiver and the greatest, is the most gracious God. As vast as his tales of heroism are, so are the mysteries behind them. One of such mysteries that has been there since thousands of years, is the old tradition of pouring water and milk over the Shiva linga.

The divine Shiva does not need to be cleansed, one who pours water on the Shivlinga cleanses his own soul. Shiva linga isn’t just a stone or a statue, which acts as a medium of connecting to the Mahadev, but is also an environment purifying device which cleanses the aura of the whole place and absorbs all negativity. It acts like an arc reactor, which disperses this evil energy and converts it into more positivity. But this conversion of energies is an exothermic reaction; i.e. it produces heat while the conversion takes place. And so, this needs to cool down to work efficiently, just like an arc reactor. So, devotees pour water and milk to cool the Shiva linga, and in turn wash away all the heat and help purify the environment even more.

Another explanation for pouring of milk and water comes from the ancient tale of Samudra Manthan, when Devatas and Asuras were churning the ocean. 'Halahal’ came out of the churning, the strongest poison which was capable of killing both Asuras and Devatas alike. To save the world from damnation, Lord Shiva drank the poison and kept it in his throat. This poison produced so much heat that the Devtas performed Ganga Abhishek on Lord Shiva and poured holy Ganga water in massive amounts on Shiva. Since then the tradition of pouring of water on Shiva linga continues.

While you pour water on the Shivaling, you also chant the Mantra of Om Namah Shivaya which involves you in the prayer mentally as well as physically and consequently uplifts your mind and body and purifies thinking.

To appease the omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient Shiva, Abhishek of Linga with flowers and fruits is performed by Vedic Brahmans. Shiva Puja is essential for removing the shroud from the absolute truth and achieving the path to Moksha.
