Why is Lord Ganesha worshiped first in any Hindu ritual.

Lord Ganesha is the God of success. So, in Hindu tradition, any endeavor should be started in the name of Ganesha including a ritual. Many rituals are performed with the aim of success or a specific result or purpose. So, Ganesha is worshipped first, to ensure success. Even if we have no explanation or we are desireless, Ganedha is worshipped to remove all obstacles in the way. It is a symbolical expression of our desire for success and obstruction-free journey. Success depends on many factors, known and unknown. Worship of Ganesha means I am taking care of all these factors and I am praying for success.

Hinduism exists at different levels. At higher level, Hinduism talks of work without desire or expectation. It is said that action with desire results into bondage and sorrow and so, we should perform Karma Yoga or work without desire because we can never have control over all factors which gives a specific result. But it is practised at at advanced stage, for spiritual seekers. For general mass of Hindus, as a cultural tradition, Ganesha is worshipped for success in all rituals.
