Death

Photo: Death

Question : You always talk about life and living, but isn’t it equally important to prepare for death?

Guruji : First, your reference towards death should change; we treat death as end of life or as an enemy of life. The moment we treat death as end of life or enemy, we become victims of death.
Death is happening all the time. In the Bhagwad Gita, 2:13, Krishna says, Dehino smin yatha dehe; kaumaram yauvanam jara; tatha dehantara-praptir; dhiras tatra na muhyati. That is, when you are young, you are death to your childhood and you are born to youth. Then it is death to youth for you are born to middle age. Later, it is death to middle age for you are born to old age. Therefore, death is happening all the time.

Death is rejuvenation of life; not its end. Of course, ultimate death also has to happen, but even there, it is one door closing and another door opening. So if you remember that 1) death is not the end, 2) death is rejuvenation of life and 3) death is happening all the time, then this knowledge will empower you.

If somebody hurts you and you don’t know how to end that hurt, it remains with you for the rest of your life. But if you know the art of dying more than the art of living, you should die to your yesterday and you should die to your hurts and also die to your upsets, because the art of dying shows the way to the path of living.
