Shiva and Shakti

Photo: Shiva and Shakti

Consciousness is that which is un-manifest. This can be glimpsed within the human experience as a witnessing state where no thought is present, no sensations is present and no sense of self is present, a feeling of isness, where all that remains, is a sense of deep intuitive knowing, a state that some Yogis point to with ‘great mystical statements’ (Maha Vakyas) such as:

‘I am that’ (Tat vam asi’)

‘I am identical with underlying intelligence’ (Aham Brahmasmi)

‘The absolute reality is pure consciousness’ (Pragyanam Brahma)

‘I am the Eternal Witness’ (Aham Sakshihi)

Consciousness is like an unmoving, unchanging observer and is known as Shiva consciousness. All forms of vibration are said to be an expression of consciousness. If it vibrates or has any kind of form it is not Shiva so it is therefore Shakti – energy.

That which vibrates creates sound, thought, matter and life itself. It is the manifest reality, which we can perceive through the senses, the senses and the sensations themselves being made up of energy.

In Tantra these dualistic concepts are given the Sanskrit names Shiva and Shakti. Shiva is the unmanifest, Shakti is the manifest.
