An interesting article about this 1,000 Lingas:
Mr. Ta took me to me some amazing places. One of these was Phnom Kulen, a nature preserve atop one of the area’s mountains. This trip took me deep into the countryside, giving me an intimate look into rural life in Cambodia.
Many old temples have been carved out of the Kulen Mountain. It was actually the original mining site for much of Siem Reap’s temples. The photo above is the river of 1000 Lingas. A sacred site for Cambodians even today, the river, as shown here, is filled with 1000 Lingas (the one shown above is one of the smaller linga carvings). What is a linga? A linga is a hindu sacred phallic carving. When I first heard this I was a bit surprised. The riverbed is filled with over 2 kilometers of these carvings and old Hindu relics. It’s actually quite impressive. The carvings eventually culminate at the edge of a magnificent waterfall.
Most of the trip into Phnom Kulen is without a paved road and to arrive at some of the villages, deep into the mountain, we took motorbikes as the road becomes too narrow. Wildlife, small villages and ancient carvings of past civilizations on roadside boulders really make this place fascinating. -lostmanproject.com
