Damru is known as the instrument of Lord Shiva. Damru was first created by Shiva to produce spiritual sounds by which this whole universe has been created and regulated. Shiva loves Damru. unfortunately it is not used in musical compositions where one needs variations of beats after beats. The sound of Damru is the sound of Omkara. Amazing thing about Damru is, it gives one beat at a time, the chords at both ends strike at the same time, the beat of Damru symbolizes the sound of OM, the all pervading sound, which also has the only one beat without any variations, that is existing since the infinity. When Shiva plays Damru, he playes Omkara, and when he dances with it, he is called Natraja. The damaru is known as a power drum, and when played, it is believed to generate spiritual energy. It is believed that Sanskrit language was recognized by the drumbeats of the Damru and Shivas performance of the cosmic dance of tandava. In the shield shape of some Damru, the triangular upward representation also symbolises male procreativity (the Lingam), and the downward round representation symbolises the female procreativity (the Yoni). Symbolically, the creation of the world begins when the lingam and yoni meet at the midpoint of the Damru, and the destruction takes place when they separate from each other.
