Chaitra Navaratri appraoches This Navaratri is known as "Vasant Navaratri" "Basanti Durga Puja" "Chaitra-Gouri" "Bhawani Navaratri" This is The Navaratri which was Pradhaan Navaratri during Satyuga ! But is also observed as AadiNavaratri today!
In Maharashtra The Bhawani of Tuljapur has a great significance during Chaitra Navaratri as The Chaitra Shuddha Ashtami which normally comes as "Durgaashtami" is the very day when Adishakti took Form as Bhawani to rescue her beloved devotee "Rajkanya Anubhooti" as she was attacked by Mahishasura!
Anubhooti was a Rajakanya of deccan region called as Tuljapur and was a great devotee of Durga!,n She was once roaming in Forests of Sahyadri and all of sudden Mahishasur arrived and was lured by the Rajakanya's beauty and He approached her to marry Rajkanya refused but Mahishasur started forcing her she ran in the forest, Mahishasur became furious and ran behind her in a form of giant Mahisha!! she climbed the whole mountain and when reached at peak and realized that there's no way further!! She started shouting and praying Maa to help! Mahishasur reached there and was about to push her in the Valley!!
A Thunderbolt fell in between and There was a huge Beautiful lady with Eight huge hands holding huge dangerous weapons riding a Huge Lion who roared and which made the whole climate disturbed!!
Mahishasura said "Who are you??, and why are you defending that lady, I want kill her she refused me!! She has no right to live!!"
The Devi said " You fool, Mahishasura I am Bhawani , Mother of all the 14 Bhuvanaas She is my devotee, If you want to kill her You must face me first!!"
Mahishasur and Bhawani fought and during fight Bhawani cut off Mahishamunda from the Body of the Mahisha! That Mahishamunda fell in the western valley near foot of the Hill!! and that Head is still present today!
mahisha took a human form and statrted running away! Bhawani chased down Mahishasur and started fighting again. The War was so fierece that due constant pressure of the feets of Both a water sprung out of the ground and a Kund was created that Kund was later known as "Kallol" kund. Kallol means fierce! in Marathi!!, At last Mahishasura was slayed by Bhawani and on the demand of Anubhooti Bhawani stayed on the Hill of Sahyadri as She stayed on the hill near Tuljapur thus known as "TuljaBhawani"

Later During Tretayuga Sri Rama chandra came here in search of Sita and had taken Darshan of Bhawani , There is a Rama paduka while in way to the Mandir!
She is Kuladevata of Sri Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Thus Now She is Known as "Maharashtra Kulaswamini". Shivaji Maharaj rebuild The Temple like a Big Fort!!
