Why Haldi or Turmeric powder is never offered to Shivalinga.
Shiva Abhishekam is usually performed to a ShivaLinga representing his manifestation as a creator of good ,by destroying evil. In many temples, one finds a vessel hung over the Lingam called thaara paathra, that continuously drips water or other offerings onto the ShivaLinga in deference to Shiva's desire for Abhisheka. Some of the common items used for Shiva Abhisheka are Curd, Milk, water, Honey, Vibhuti (holy ash), fruit, sandalwood paste, ghee , bilva leaves and flowers. Turmeric is an important part of all Hindu rituals and is used in almost all pujas. It is believed that offering turmeric appeases God and Goddess. Even in pujas turmeric is used because of its medicinal qualities. But it's not used in the worship of Shivalinga. A Shivalinga has two parts, one is associated with Lord Shiva while the jaladhari is a representation of Goddess Parvati. The part of Shivalinga associated with Lord Shiva represents masculinity and turmeric is considered a cosmetic product for females. Hence, offering turmeric to Shivalinga is not considered good. But, Shivlingas jaladhari is associated with females hence you can put turmeric on the jaladhari! Om Namah Shivaya ~ Jai ShivaShakti !! ๐๐ป๐๐ป
