The month of Shravan is considered very auspicious for worshipping Lord Shiva, as the whole month is dedicated to HIM. It is holiest and most auspicious months in Hindi Calendar. Each day of Sawan is regarded as very pious. Special prayers and rituals are performed in Lord Shiva temples. Shiva devotees visit temples and offer water, milk, flowers, fruit and belpatra (Bilva leaves) on Shivlingam. It is believed that the worship of Shiva during Shrawan month is 108 times more powerful than worshipping during normal days. It is believed that those who observe Sawan Somwar vrat will have their desires fulfilled and will have all their prayers answered by the Shiva.
Legend associated with Shravan Month is that the "Samudra Manthan" or churning of ocean took place in this month. During the churning, the poison that came out, and was consumed by Lord Shiva which he stored it in his throat subsequently turning his throat blue, and hence Shiva is attributed to the name NeelKantha. To reduce the poison's impact, Lord Shiva wore the crescent moon on his head. To lessen the effect of the poison the Gods and Devas started offering the water from the Holy Ganges to Lord Shiva.
Since Shravan is the most auspicious and sacred period, one can take advantage of it by performing Shravan Maas Shiva Puja. Vrat, Puja, aradhana, mantra siddhi and other spiritual practices if done properly then no doubt success will come. Wear Rudraksh, and also use a Rudraksh mala for Japa. Offer Vibhuti or Bhasma to Lord Shiva and put some on your forehead. Make offerings of Bilva leaves, panchamrit (milk, yoghurt, clarified butter, honey and jaggery) on Shivalingam. Recite Shiv Chalisa and Aarti. Chant Om Namah Shivaya and Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. During this month, the cosmos is super charged with Shiva tattvas (Shiva elements) that purify the mind, the senses, the body and the soul through the rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva!
