Trishul and Sudarshan Chakra are two of the most powerful Weapons mentioned in Hindu Scriptures. While the Trishul is Lord Shiva’s weapon, the Sudarshana Chakra is associated with Shri Vishnu. These have been used many times by Shiva and Vishnu to put an end to the forces of evil; on earth and in heaven. While there are many theories about it's origin, the most accepted one is from Vishnu Purana.
Vishwakarma is the architect of the Gods and a widely revered God in Hinduism. His daughter Sanjana was married to Suryadeva. But Suryadeva’s extreme heat and light were unbearable for Sanjana. Sanjana couldn’t withstand the extreme heat and her skin darkened a lot. She was in terrible pain and pleaded to her father Vishwakarma for a solution to this problem. Vishwakarma revealed this problem to Suryadev and suggested a remedy. He shaved off some parts of the Sun which reduced his glow a bit. After doing so, he made a few things from the left over dust of the Sun’s energy. He made it into the Pushpak Vimaan, the Trishul and the Sudarshan Chakra. Later the Pushpak Vimaan became the transport of Lord Kuber, the Trishul was given to Lord Shiva and the Chakra became the main weapon of Shri Vishnu.
Trishul represents the three aspects of consciousness – waking, dreaming and sleeping, and it represents the three gunas – satva, rajas and tamas. Holding a trishul signifies that Shiva is above all the three states – waking, dreaming and sleeping, yet is the upholder of these three states. The divinity is beyond the three gunas, but he holds the three gunas together.!!
