Sometimes you just feel low for no reason at all. The change of weather can make anyone feel down. Seasonal depression can affect your health, your relationships, and your everyday activities. Seasonal affective disorder is a form of depression that occurs at the same time each year, usually in winter. Otherwise known as seasonal depression, SAD can affect your mood and energy levels, taking a toll on all aspects of your life and your sense of self-worth. You may feel like a completely different person ; hopeless, sad, tense, or stressed, with no interest in friends or activities you normally love. SAD is a mood disorder that affects an individual the same time each year, usually starting when the weather becomes colder in September or October, and ends in April or May when the weather becomes warmer. People with SAD feel depressed during the shorter days of winter, and more cheerful and energetic during the brightness of spring and summer. SAD affects about 1% to 2% of the population, millions of Americans are affected, particularly women and young people, while a milder form of winter blues may affect as many 10 to 20 percent of people. No matter where you live, though, or how dark and cold the winters, the more you understand about seasonal depression, the better equipped you’ll be to manage or even prevent the condition.
The signs and symptoms of seasonal affective disorder are the same as those for major depression. Depressed mood, low self-esteem, Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy. Feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. Feeling angry, irritable or stressed. Fatigue and lack of energy; reduced sex drive. Use of drugs or alcohol for comfort.
If you have a friend or loved one who suffers from SAD, you can help them tremendously. Try to spend more time with the person, even though they may not seem to want any company. Help them with their treatment plan. Remind them often that summer is only a season away. Tell them that their sad feelings are only temporary, and they will feel better in no time. Go outside and do something together. Take a walk, or exercise. Get them to spend some time outside in the natural sunlight. Just remember to bundle up!
