भगवान शिव का रूप वाकई अद्भुत है। पौराणिक कथाओं एवं कहानियों में भगवान शिव के जिस प्रकार के रूप का वर्णन हमें मिलता है, वह सच में आश्चर्यजनक है। एक हाथ में डमरू तो एक में त्रिशूल है, गले में सर्प और जटाओं में गंगा की धारा है। शरीर पर भस्म और बाघ की खाल लपेटी है। यह है शिवजी का रूप.... क्या कभी आपने सोचा है कि भगवान शिव ने बाघ की खाल क्यों धारण की है? हम शिवजी की जितनी भी तस्वीरें देख लें, उनमें या तो वे बाघ की खाल पहने हुए हैं या फिर उस पर विराजमान हैं। लेकिन बाघ की खाल से उनका क्या संबंध है?

आखिर वे इसे क्यों धारण करते हैं या फिर क्यों बाघ की खाल पर बैठते हैं? इस सवाल का जवाब हमें शिव पुराण से हासिल होता है, जिसमें भगवान शिव और बाघ से संबंधित एक कथा दर्ज है। इस पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार भगवान शिव एक बार ब्रह्मांड का गमन करते-करते एक जंगल में पहुंचे जो कि कई ऋषि-मुनियों का स्थान था। यहां वे अपने परिवार समेत रहते थे।

भगवान शिव इस जंगल से निर्वस्त्र गुजर रहे थे, वे इस बात से अनजान थे कि उन्होंने वस्त्र धारण नहीं कर रखे। शिवजी का सुडौल शरीर देख ऋषि-मुनियों की पत्नियां उनकी ओर आकर्षित होने लगी। वह धीरे-धीरे सभी कार्यों को छोड़ केवल शिवजी पर ध्यान देने लगीं। तत्पश्चात जब ऋषियों को यह ज्ञात हुआ कि शिवजी के कारण (जिन्हें ऋषि एक साधारण मनुष्य मान रहे थे) उनकी पत्नियां मार्ग से भटक रही हैं तो वे बेहद क्रोधित हुए।

सभी ऋषियों ने शिवजी को सबक सिखाने के लिए एक योजना बनाई। उन्होंने शिवजी के मार्ग में एक बड़ा गड्ढा बना दिया, मार्ग से गुजरते हुए शिवजी उसमें गिर गए। जैसे ही ऋषियों ने दिखा कि शिवजी उनकी चाल में फंस गए हैं, उन्होंने उस गड्ढे में एक बाघ को भी गिरा दिया, ताकि वह शिवजी को मारकर खा जाए।

लेकिन आगे जो हुआ उसे देख सभी चकित रह गए। शिवजी ने स्वयं उस बाघ को मार डाला और उसकी खाल को पहन गड्ढे से बाहर आ गए। तब सभी ऋषि-मुनियों को यह आभास हुआ कि यह कोई साधारण मनुष्य नहीं है। इस पौराणिक कहानी को आधार मानते हुए यह बताया जाता है कि क्यों शिवजी बाघ की खाल पहनते हैं या फिर उस खाल के ऊपर विराजमान होते हैं।

According to folklore, the tiger skin signifies Shiva as the controller of all the powers in the world. However, there’s a compelling story in the Shiva Purana that tells us how Shiva came to sit on a tiger skin or why he wears it.

Shiva used to travel across the world as a bare-bodied sage. Once, he was passing through a forest, which was home to several powerful saints who lived there with their wives in their ashrams. The wives of the saints were attracted to the young good-looking Shiva, although they were unaware of his presence. Yet, the wives were constantly distracted and could not focus on their daily routines. When the saints figured that the reason behind the changed behaviour of the wives was Shiva, they decided to teach him a lesson.
Shiva used to go for a walk every day. Thus, the saints decided to dig a massive pit on the same path. When Shiva reached the same pit, the sages used all their powers and created a tiger that came out of the pit. But it wasn’t difficult for Shiva to handle the tiger. He killed it, tore off its skin and draped it around his body. Eventually, the saints realised that one who could easily conquer their powers was not an ordinary sage, and fell at his feet. Since then, Shiva wears the tiger skin, which symbolically shows that he is all powerful.
Lord Shiva sitting on a slain tiger skin also symbolises the victory of the divine force over animal instincts. The tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. Shiva is beyond and above any kind of force. He is the master of Shakti. The tiger skin that he wears symbolises victory over every force. Tiger also represent lust.
